Description
Alvis E. Hamilton is a central figure in the narrative of Last Exile, an eleven-year-old girl who is first encountered as a mysterious piece of cargo being transported in a damaged vanship. Her true identity is that of the last surviving member of the Hamilton family, one of the four ruling houses of the Guild. This heritage makes her much more than a child in need of rescue; she is the living key to activating Exile, a legendary and powerful ancient vessel that many factions seek to control.
Physically, Alvis is a small girl with a round face and large, pale blue eyes. She has long silver hair that is typically styled into two buns on the sides of her head, and she usually wears a simple knee-length white dress with an apron and black boots. Her appearance and quiet demeanor often make her seem younger and more fragile than her actual age, a perception reinforced by her shy and initially timid personality.
When Claus Valca and Lavie Head first encounter her, Alvis is frightened and confused, having lost her guardians, a nurse named Gita and the pilot Ralf Wednesday, in an attack by the Guild. She displays a quiet intuition, quickly understanding that the people who had been protecting her are dead even when Claus and Lavie attempt to spare her from the truth. Despite her initial wariness, she forms a strong, trusting bond with Claus and Lavie, who become her devoted protectors. She becomes particularly attached to them, viewing them as her closest friends and feeling safest in their presence. A cherished cow doll, a gift from Lavie, is her constant companion and a symbol of this connection.
Alvis’s primary role in the story is as the object of a desperate power struggle. Because she is the key to Exile, the Guild, under Maestro Delphine Eraclea, relentlessly pursues her. Her importance is such that she is often referred to as the Cargo by Alex Row, the captain of the Silvana, the ship that ultimately takes her into protective custody. Her motivations are simple but profound: to survive, to be with those she trusts, and to find a place of safety. As she becomes more aware of her significance, she accepts her role in unlocking Exile, which is essential to ending the war between Anatoray and Disith.
Key relationships define her journey. Claus and Lavie are her primary protectors, and she becomes an honorary member of their small family. On board the Silvana, she slowly warms to the crew, becoming more active and even organizing a birthday party for the eccentric Guild exile, Dio Eraclea. Her relationship with Alex Row is more distant; he sees her as a strategic asset, though he is the one who holds the final piece of the mysterion needed to activate Exile. In the sequel series, Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing, an older Alvis continues to be sought after by those who wish to control Exile, and she maintains a close relationship with Dio, who helps protect her.
Throughout the first series, Alvis undergoes significant development. She begins as a passive, scared child who is passed from one guardian to the next. Over time, she grows more confident and proactive. She learns to act as a simple navigator, studying from an old notebook of Lavie’s. Her most remarkable ability, however, is entirely unique to her. As the living key, when the verses of the Mysterion are recited, her body reacts by accumulating a massive amount of power. This energy can overload Claudia systems and super-charge nearby machinery, but she has no control over this ability; it is a purely reactive and involuntary response to the ancient incantations. This power, which she can neither command nor fully understand, is the source of her immense importance and the danger that constantly surrounds her. After the conflict is resolved, she finally finds peace, living a normal life on a farm with other children.
