Description
Alex Rowe is the 28-year-old captain of the Silvana, a legendary and powerful battleship that operates independently of the two warring nations of Anatoray and Disith. A graduate of the Anatoray Military Academy, his past is marked by profound tragedy that shapes every action he takes. Before becoming a captain, Rowe was a vanship pilot. He was the sole survivor of a mission to deliver a peace treaty through the treacherous Grand Stream, a mission that claimed the lives of his mentors, Hamilcar Valca and Georges Head, as well as his fiancée, Euris Bassianus. During this fateful voyage, he witnessed the Guild Maestro Delphine Eraclea smiling as his loved ones perished, an image that fuels a deep and abiding hatred for her and the Guild.

On the surface, Rowe presents a cold, unemotional, and harsh façade. He is typically taciturn and calm under even the most dire circumstances, appearing detached and solely focused on his duties. This reserved exterior masks an internal obsession: a singular drive for revenge against Maestro Delphine. This pent-up rage can surface violently when Delphine is near, causing him to act recklessly, such as ordering his ship to fire on her vessel in a frenzy, an order his crew must sometimes countermand for the safety of all. Despite his emotional distance, he commands fierce loyalty from his crew, who respect his abilities as a master strategist and his formidable presence. His character is described by his creator as a "loner" and was visually based on the classic character Captain Harlock.

Rowe’s role in the story is that of a powerful and enigmatic force whose personal quest drives much of the plot. While he accepts the mission to protect the young girl Alvis E. Hamilton, his true goal is to use her, and the "Key to Exile" she possesses, to locate and destroy Exile itself, an ancient, mythical vessel that is the source of the Guild's absolute authority. He operates the Silvana according to his own agenda, loosely cooperating with Anatoray only when it suits his purpose, and he eventually severs ties completely to pursue his revenge.

His key relationships are often defined by his past. His first officer, Sophia Forrester, bears a striking resemblance to his deceased fiancée and remains deeply loyal to him, though he spurns her affectionate overtures. He shares a complex history with Vincent Alzey, his former roommate at the academy, who eventually becomes a rival sent to confront Rowe over his refusal to hand over Alvis. Most significantly, Rowe is revealed to be a close friend of the fathers of the show's protagonists, Claus Valca and Lavie Head. It was Rowe who delivered the news of their deaths and left his own vanship with their families, which Claus and Lavie would later use as their own.

Rowe undergoes notable development as his quest reaches its climax. His single-minded pursuit of revenge leads to his capture by Delphine, who uses a truth-serum-laced vine to extract the mystical verses, or Mysterion, needed to control Exile. Rowe had deliberately withheld one of the verses, entrusting it to Sophia, thus thwarting Delphine’s complete control. In his final moments, he breaks free from his restraints long enough to strangle the Maestro with his bare hands. As the Silvana, believing him lost, fires upon and destroys Delphine’s flagship, Rowe dies in the explosion, his final words being a call to his lost love, Euris, and a farewell to the sky.

Rowe possesses several notable abilities that make him a formidable captain. He is a master strategist in both warfare and other contexts, known for daring and risky tactics. He is also an astounding marksman, famously demonstrating his skill by shooting a Guild pilot in the head at long range. He is a skilled vanship pilot, though somewhat rusty by the time of the series, and is proficient in ship-to-ship combat. His characteristic black cloak hides a lean, tall frame, and he often walks with a slight limp from his old injuries, carrying a cane that also serves as a hidden weapon.
