Description
Dio Eraclea is a member of the Guild, the ruling technocratic aristocracy in the world of Prester. He holds the title of a Guild Principal and is the younger brother of Maestro Delphine Eraclea, the supreme leader of the Guild, making him the heir to the House of Eraclea. Physically, Dio is recognized by his white or silver hair, purple eyes, and the pointed ears that are a common feature of his people. He often wears decorative orange eye makeup and a distinctive white Guild uniform, a departure from the traditional black, which he chose for himself. A portion of his hair on the left side is grown longer and braided. He is often seen with a pair of goggles given to him by a friend, which he keeps around his neck.
Dio possesses a playful, cheerful, and highly eccentric personality that stands in stark contrast to the cold and political nature of the Guild. He is often described as childish, acting on pure curiosity and an innocent selfishness, and he has a habit of thrusting his neck into anything he finds interesting. This unrestrained and free-spirited demeanor makes him appear bizarre or creepy to others, but it is a genuine expression of his desire for freedom and fun, such as singing birthday songs to himself or giving nicknames to people he meets. He has little concern for personal space and treats many serious situations, including combat, as if they were a child’s game. However, this carefree exterior masks a deep-seated fear of his older sister, Delphine. As a young child, Dio witnessed Delphine murder their parents during her rise to power, an act that sculpted his attitude and personality through constant fear.
Dio is a supremely talented pilot, demonstrating skills that are considered transcendental and often superior to the main protagonist, Claus Valca. He is highly adept at piloting both the standard vanships of the world and the Guild's personal starfish-shaped craft. His abilities are such that he can fly without the assistance of a navigator, a rare feat that showcases his incredible natural talent.
His motivations are driven by a desire to escape the oppressive control of his sister and the rigid life of the Guild. Fearing the day he comes of age and his will is subjugated to Delphine's during a deadly ceremony known as the Trial of Agoon, Dio seizes any opportunity for freedom. This opportunity comes when he becomes infatuated with Claus Valca's flying skills, particularly his signature Immelmann turn. Dio runs away from the Guild with his best friend and bodyguard, Lucciola, to join the crew of the battleship Silvana, seeking a life of free flight and adventure among the common people he finds so much more appealing. The bond with Lucciola is the most significant relationship in his life; Lucciola was given to him by Delphine as a companion, and over time they developed a deep and unbreakable friendship. Dio would often do wild things just to provoke a reaction from the stoic Lucciola, wanting to understand his true feelings.
Throughout the story, Dio’s role evolves from an antagonist Guild noble to an ally of the Silvana's crew. After being forced to undergo the Trial of Agoon, he suffers a severe psychological breakdown, an injury from which he never fully recovers. Following the events of the first series and the return to Earth, he appears in the sequel, Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing. Now older, he has joined a group of Sky Pirates, including Fam Fan Fan, and later serves as a Vanship Squadron Captain on the ship Silvius. He still displays his free spirit and childish personality, though he is also haunted by the death of Lucciola, keeping the rear seat of his vanship empty in memory of his fallen comrade.
Dio’s notable abilities extend beyond piloting. He is also a formidable combatant, having won the deadly Trial of Agoon and later defeating the highly skilled assassin Alauda. His knowledge of Guild mysteries, including the secrets of the ancient Exile ships, also proves to be critically important in the conflicts on Earth. Despite his fragile mental state and childish nature, Dio remains one of the most skilled and significant figures in the sky.
