Description
Mamoru Torigai is a supporting character in RahXephon who initially appears as a friend and classmate of Ayato Kamina within Tokyo Jupiter. He is a true Mulian, belonging to the same bloodline as figures such as Ernst von Bähbem, Maya, and Quon, and holds a high-ranking position within Mulian society. His role in the story is that of a conflicted acquaintance whose personal attachments and hidden loyalties drive his actions.

In terms of background, Mamoru was a student living inside Tokyo Jupiter alongside Ayato and their mutual friend Hiroko Asahina. He was romantically involved with Hiroko, though she harbored feelings for Ayato, a fact that Mamoru resented. When Hiroko left Tokyo Jupiter with Ayato, Mamoru developed a deep-seated dislike for Ayato, viewing him as a rival. Despite this, he outwardly maintained a friendly demeanor, acting as a frivolous companion to keep close watch on Ayato on behalf of the Mulians.

His personality is marked by a blend of youthful jealousy and a sense of duty to his Mulian heritage. He is outwardly sociable but inwardly bitter, motivated by a desire to reclaim Hiroko's affection and to prove his own worth. Later, his sense of betrayal and loss drives him to confront Ayato directly. After Hiroko's death, Mamoru's grief turns to vengeance, leading him to pilot a repaired Dolem in an attack on the RahXephon. He is killed in that battle, but is later resurrected when Ayato re-tunes the world.

Mamoru's key relationships center on Ayato and Hiroko. His rivalry with Ayato is personal and emotional, rooted in unrequited love and a perceived theft of his future. He also has a connection to the Mulian leadership, which he serves as an operative. His development moves from a seemingly ordinary student to a revealed Mulian agent and finally to a tragic antagonist undone by his own emotions.

Notable abilities include his status as a Mulian, which grants him a inherent connection to the metaphysical forces of the world, and his capability to pilot a Dolem, the Mulian combat mecha. His name, Mamoru, meaning "to protect," ironically contrasts with his actions, as his protective impulses toward Hiroko ultimately lead to destruction.
