Description
Natsumi Mizuki is a high school student who works part-time as the only employee at the Honky Tonk cafe in Shinjuku. She first encounters the GetBackers, Ban Midou and Ginji Amano, when she hires them to retrieve a small cat‑like toy that was stolen. The toy was a handmade gift from her mother, who passed away before Natsumi entered high school. After that job, she becomes a close friend of the duo and continues to work at the cafe, where she helps her boss, Paul Wan, by sometimes collecting debts owed to him by the GetBackers.
Natsumi is cheerful, youthful, and sometimes naive, often bringing a comedic energy to her interactions with the other characters. She is deeply devoted to Ban and Ginji, frequently worrying about their safety when they are on missions and staying up late at the Honky Tonk to welcome them back. Despite her generally lighthearted demeanor, she can display a steely resolve that reminds others of Paul Wan, and she occasionally shows maturity beyond her years, especially when it comes to supporting her friends during difficult times.
Her motivations stem from a genuine desire to take care of the people she cares about. She promises Ban and Ginji that she will make sure they never go hungry, and she often wishes she could join them on their retrievals rather than staying behind at the diner. In the anime, Natsumi has extraordinary skill at ping‑pong and is also competent at shogi and cooking, though she lacks talent in most other areas. On one occasion, she takes on a retrieval job herself when the GetBackers are busy with another case, wearing an improvised outfit made from Ban’s shirt and glasses and Ginji’s pants and gloves. She also teams up with Emishi to complete a mission.
In the manga, Natsumi’s backstory differs notably. She is introduced as the daughter of an eminent virus researcher, and her first job for the GetBackers involves rescuing her miniature dachshund, Lucky, who has been forced to perform tricks at a television station. This case leads into a larger conspiracy involving superhuman mutants and introduces the character Hevn. Throughout both versions of the story, Natsumi remains a steadfast friend and a grounding presence at the Honky Tonk, offering emotional support to the GetBackers and the cafe’s regulars.
