Description
Akabane Kuroudo, also known by the alias Doctor Jackal, is a prominent figure who operates as a Transporter, an individual hired to escort cargo to specified locations. He is a man shrouded in mystery, with an unknown age and a past that hints at a dramatic transformation. It has been revealed that he was once a genuine doctor and surgeon who saved lives on battlefields. However, after failing to save a young boy’s life despite his best efforts, his path took a dark turn, leading him to abandon his calling and embrace his current persona as one of the most feared individuals in his world.

In terms of personality, Akabane is a study in contradictions. He presents himself as a consummate professional, always impeccably dressed in a formal black suit, tie, fedora, and long trench coat, and he speaks with unnerving politeness and manners. This gentlemanly exterior, however, masks a profoundly sadistic and hedonistic core. His primary motivation is not monetary gain but entertainment; he accepts jobs solely for his own amusement and derives his greatest pleasure from the thrill of combat and the act of killing. He has a notorious habit of decapitating his enemies and carving the letter J into his victims, a calling card of his lethal profession. His psychological state is often described as unbalanced and psychotic, yet he remains remarkably lucid and clear-minded, which makes him exceptionally dangerous.

Akabane's role in the story is that of a recurring antagonist and a wild card. He is neither a true ally nor a consistent enemy to the main protagonists, Ban Mido and Ginji Amano, but rather a force of nature driven by his own desires. His ultimate goal is to find an opponent who can push him to his absolute limits and show him the true extent of his own power, something he has never seen. This quest is what fuels his deep, obsessive interest in Ban and Ginji. After his first encounter with Ginji, where the young man discovered the secret of his scalpels and managed to defeat him, Akabane became fascinated with both of them, frequently challenging them to battles even when they were nominally on the same side.

His key relationships are defined by this obsession. He views both Ban Mido and Ginji Amano as worthy opponents who possess the potential to provide him with the entertainment and challenge he craves. Ginji, in particular, is often terrified of Akabane, especially after the transporter revealed he had adapted to counter Ginji's previous winning strategy. Despite his murderous intent, Akabane has also served as a mysterious benefactor on several occasions, working with the Professor to set events in motion that ultimately help the protagonists, revealing a deeper, more complex connection to the overarching narrative. It is also suggested that he originally came from Babylon City, a location of great importance in the series, though his reasons for leaving remain unclear.

Throughout the series, Akabane shows significant development, though it is more a matter of his power and mystique growing rather than a fundamental change in personality. As the story progresses, his coat and hair grow longer, and his hat brim widens, visually representing his increasing otherworldly presence. His powers also evolve exponentially, as he is a quick learner who adapts to counter his opponents' abilities, such as changing his metal scalpels to non-magnetic ceramic ones after his first loss to Ginji. A notable moment of development occurs when he is seemingly killed in battle, only to rise from the dead, stating that he has never thought about his death, therefore he cannot die, leaving even his enemies astonished. His final battle with Ban Mido is a culmination of his character arc, where he admits to never having shown his true strength before and asks Ban to help him see his own limits.

Akabane's abilities are as extraordinary as his personality. His primary weapons are 108 razor-sharp surgical scalpels, which he does not simply conceal on his person but actually generates from his own blood and stores within his body. He has telekinetic control over these blades, allowing him to launch them with deadly accuracy in techniques like Bloody Rain, where he sends them all into the air to rain down on a target, Bloody Hurricane, and Bloody Stream. Beyond the scalpels, he can manifest larger weapons from his blood, most notably the Bloody Sword, a powerful blade he reserves for opponents he deems worthy, and which is said to be capable of cutting through time and space. He also possesses instant-kill techniques like the Bloody Cross, which cleaves an opponent into four pieces with a cross-shaped pattern from his palm. Perhaps his most defining power is his reality-warping ability, often described as Divine Providence. It functions on a quantum uncertainty principle where if Akabane cannot imagine something, it cannot happen. This is the basis for his seeming immortality, as he cannot imagine his own death, and it allows him to negate enemy abilities or cut through supposedly indestructible objects because he cannot imagine them being beyond his power. Combined with his superhuman speed, regenerative capabilities, and a surgical mind, these abilities make Akabane Kuroudo one of the most formidable and feared characters in his world.
