Description
Makubex is a character from the series Getbackers. He is a fourteen-year-old boy with short gray hair and blue eyes, and he stands approximately 160 centimeters tall, weighing 52 kilograms. Abandoned as a baby in a sack inside the Infinity City, only his surname Makube was known from a tag on the bag. The letter X in his name represents an unknown variable, and his full designation is always written in romaji. He was raised by a man named Radou Gen, a pharmacist and one of the programmers of the Infinity City, whom Makubex calls Grandfather. Gen taught him computer skills, but Makubex quickly surpassed his teacher and became a genius hacker capable of manipulating computers to do whatever he pleases; his abilities are so advanced that he could, given outside resources, construct an atomic bomb.
Makubex left home to join the group known as VOLTS, which was founded by Ginji Amano, the Thunder Emperor. Within VOLTS, he became one of the Four Kings, alongside Shido Fuyuki, Kazuki Fuuchouin, and Masaki Kurusu. He was nicknamed the Monster's Brain because of his role as the group's strategic intelligence. Unlike the other three kings, Makubex deeply admired Ginji and had great difficulty adjusting when Ginji eventually left the Infinity City. After Ginji's departure, Makubex became the sole remaining king and took over as the leader of VOLTS, instituting a dictatorial rule over the Lower Town of the Infinity Fortress. During this period, he was known as the young demon king or the devil boy king.
Makubex possesses a cool, calm, and collected personality. He is meticulous in analyzing opponents and executing strategic plans. Beneath his composed exterior, he is fundamentally kind and intelligent, though his past of abandonment and the mysterious circumstances of his upbringing cause others to worry about him and sometimes distrust him. His motivations stem from a desire to understand and control the forces that govern the Infinity City. He believed that the upper level, called Babylon City, controlled the lives of everyone in the lower levels, and he wanted to make a deal with the god of the city. To this end, he attempted to create an implosion-type nuclear weapon using a data disc known as IL, which stands for implosion lens. His calculations went wrong, and he was ultimately defeated by Ban Midou's Evil Eye ability.
In his role as the de facto ruler of the Lower Town, Makubex commands a number of subordinates. His second-in-command is Sakura Kakei. During the Infinity Fortress arc, his four chief subordinates are Juubei Kakei, Haruki Emishi, Takuma Fudo, and Kyoji Kagami. After Fudo disappears, Juubei and Emishi remain with him. In the manga, after the Divine Design arc, Toshiki Uryuu comes under his command and is assigned to Juubei.
A key relationship is his bond with Ginji Amano. Makubex adored Ginji and struggled after Ginji left VOLTS. Their conflict during the IL arc eventually leads to reconciliation when Ginji acknowledges Makubex's leadership and transfer of power. This moment marks significant development for Makubex, as it resolves his inner turmoil and solidifies his role as a protector of Infinity City rather than a dictator.
Makubex's notable abilities are centered on his unparalleled computer hacking skills, which are described as being as natural as breathing. He can interface with and reprogram the technology within the Infinity Fortress, access information, and create complex weaponry. In some interpretations, he can allocate archived data into other beings, potentially recreating memories, appearances, personalities, or abilities. His analytical mind and strategic planning make him a formidable tactician. He is also the closest resident to have reached the approaches to Babylon City, though he never successfully entered it. Makubex's development throughout the story involves moving from a secretive, isolated ruler to a leader who reconnects with Ginji and finds a more balanced purpose within the Infinity City.
