OVA
Description
Kei is a young orphan from the Shadow District on the resort planet Taowajan. Although initially mistaken for a boy and presenting with short red hair and blue eyes, Kei is revealed to be a girl partway through the story. She is the leader of a local gang of street kids, a role that demonstrates her resourcefulness and survival instincts in a harsh environment.
In terms of personality, Kei is a plucky and spirited child who can initially come across as bratty or stubborn, but she possesses a likable and determined core. Her difficult circumstances have forced her to grow up quickly, making her independent and resourceful beyond her years. Despite this tough exterior, she is also capable of forming deep attachments, and she quickly becomes especially fond of the bounty hunter Iria. This admiration drives many of her actions, as she seeks to prove her worth and contribute to the fight against the alien creature Zeiram.
Kei's primary motivation throughout the series is to help Iria and to escape the confines of her difficult life on the streets. She idolizes Iria in much the same way that Iria looks up to her own brother, Glenn, creating a parallel between the two characters. This connection gives Kei a sense of purpose and a goal to strive toward. When Iria becomes hesitant or reluctant to continue battling Zeiram after suffering a severe injury, Kei becomes frustrated and decides to take matters into her own hands, going after the creature alone before being stopped by the veteran bounty hunter Fujikuro.
Kei's role in the story is that of a companion and aide to the protagonist, Iria. She befriends Iria after the bounty hunter lands on Taowajan, and she becomes a crucial ally in the subsequent battles against Zeiram. Her dynamic with Iria is central, as she both admires and challenges the older girl. The nature of Kei's feelings toward Iria is given a new perspective following a significant revelation about her past late in the series, though this plot point is handled with relative restraint and not over-dramatized. Her relationship with the gruff bounty hunter Fujikuro is also notable; it is he who exposes her true gender, and he later stops her from rushing recklessly into danger, showing that he does care for her wellbeing in his own way. She also shares a close bond with her best friend from the streets, Komimasa.
Kei undergoes notable development from a simple street kid trying to survive into a brave and proactive individual who directly engages with a planet-threatening crisis. Her arc is tied to the discovery of her true identity and how that reshapes her relationships, but she primarily grows by choosing to face danger alongside Iria rather than remaining a passive observer.
Despite her young age, Kei possesses several impressive abilities. She is depicted as a tech wizard with a natural aptitude for operating advanced machinery. She is able to pilot a space shuttle more skillfully than Iria, and she also constructs a portable forcefield device that proves to be a crucial asset for Iria in the final confrontation with Zeiram. These technical skills, combined with her courage and loyalty, make her an indispensable member of the small group fighting against the seemingly unstoppable alien.
