Description
Pedro is a young goatherd in the alpine village of Dörfli and one of the central supporting characters in the anime Heidi, Girl of the Alps. He lives with his mother Brigitte and his grandmother, an elderly blind woman whom he helps care for. His family is modest, and his work as a goatherd is what brings income into the household, since his father died when Pedro was very young. He is shown with brown hair, a beige sweater and hat, blue trousers, and brown boots.
Pedro's daily job is to gather all the goats belonging to the villagers each morning, lead them up to the mountain pastures so they can graze and stay healthy, and bring them back down in the evening. This routine makes him highly familiar with the mountains and their animals, and he has a genuine fondness for the goats under his care. His connection to the natural world of the Alps is central to who he is, and he is most at ease in the open pastures rather than in village or crowded settings.
In personality, Pedro is simple, good-natured, and somewhat naive. He is loyal to his family and friends and shows a caring, responsible side, particularly toward his blind grandmother. He also has a notable appetite and is quite fond of eating whenever he gets the chance. He struggles with reading and with schoolwork in general, and because of those difficulties he tends to think that studying and attending school are not really important, preferring the practical skills and freedom of his mountain life. He can be set in his ways and is initially reluctant to accept new ideas or changes introduced by others.
Pedro becomes Heidi's closest friend during her time in the Alps. He is the one who first brings her into the rhythms of the herding life, and the two spend long days together on the mountain pastures, sharing meals, chores, and small adventures. Their friendship is a central part of Heidi's happiness in the mountains, and Pedro is also part of the small circle of people she grows attached to, along with her grandfather and Pedro's grandmother, whom Heidi visits regularly.
His main motivations are tied to his simple way of life: he wants to do his herding work well, support and protect his family, and keep the familiar routines of the mountain world he loves. His friendship with Heidi also becomes one of his strongest attachments, and he is protective of that bond.
During the time Heidi is taken away to Frankfurt, Pedro continues his herding life, and the friendship resumes when she returns to the Alps. Later, when Clara Sesemann comes to stay and Heidi gives much of her attention to her guest, Pedro becomes jealous of Clara, without fully understanding Heidi's intentions. His jealousy creates a period of friction in the later part of the story, but the conflict settles as everyone rejoices when Clara gradually learns to walk again.
Pedro also has his own moments of growth and accomplishment. In the winter period, when Heidi and her grandfather move down to the village, Pedro builds his own sled and wins a local race, showing his practical skill and determination. Across the series, his experiences with Heidi challenge his resistance to change and help him develop as a friend, while he remains true to his identity as a boy of the mountains.
