Description
Cody Hida is one of the main characters in the Digimon Adventure 02 series. He is a young DigiDestined whose partner is the armadillo-like Digimon, Armadillomon. Despite being the youngest member of the new generation of DigiDestined, Cody is notably the most serious, mature, and contemplative child in the group, often displaying wisdom that seems well beyond his years.

Cody's background is marked by a significant personal tragedy. His father, Hiroki Hida, was a police officer who died in the line of duty while protecting someone in London. This loss profoundly shaped Cody's worldview and his strong, almost rigid, sense of justice and morality. After his father's passing, Cody was raised primarily by his mother and his grandfather, Chikara Hida, who is a kendo master and serves as the primary masculine influence in his life. It was his grandfather who instilled in him many of his values and his disciplined approach to life. In August 1999, before the events of the main series, a young Cody was a passenger on an airplane that was attacked by the rogue Digimon Kuwagamon. He was saved by two other Digimon, MegaKabuterimon and Garudamon, an event that set the stage for him to later become a DigiDestined.

In terms of personality, Cody is the most serious member of the team, conducting himself with a level of maturity that stands in stark contrast to some of his more energetic peers. His worldview is initially very black and white; he sees things as either right or wrong, good or evil, with very little room for nuance. This can make him stubborn and sometimes judgmental, as he holds both himself and others to an incredibly high standard. He is deeply curious, but unlike the previous bearer of the Digi-Egg of Knowledge, Izzy Izumi, who was fascinated by technology and the mechanics of the world, Cody's curiosity is focused on people, human nature, and the reasons behind their actions. Like the original bearer of Reliability, Joe Kido, Cody is honest and trustworthy, and he often questions his own reliability, fearing that he might be letting his friends down despite his best efforts.

Cody's primary motivation stems from his strong sense of justice, a trait inherited from his late father and reinforced by his grandfather's teachings. He is driven to do what is right and to protect the innocent. This morality is challenged throughout the series, particularly in situations that are not clear-cut. A major part of his character arc involves learning to reconcile his black-and-white view of the world with the complex moral ambiguities of real life. He learns that sometimes a small deception can serve a greater good and that people who have done terrible things may be capable of genuine remorse and deserve a chance at redemption.

Within the DigiDestined team, Cody plays a crucial role as a grounding presence. He is the voice of reason and caution, often prompting the group to think before acting. He is a close friend of Yolei Inoue, as they live in the same apartment building, and he shares a strong bond with his partner, Armadillomon, whose more relaxed and cheerful demeanor balances Cody's seriousness. He has a particularly significant relationship with Joe Kido, who acts as an older brother figure to him, and with Takeru Takaishi, who becomes his partner for DNA Digivolution to create the powerful Shakkoumon.

One of the most defining aspects of Cody's development is his struggle to forgive Ken Ichijouji for his past actions as the villainous Digimon Emperor. While the other new DigiDestined are quicker to accept Ken after his defeat, Cody cannot easily set aside his sense of justice and finds it incredibly difficult to trust someone who caused so much pain. This internal conflict comes to a head, creating tension within the group, but eventually, after witnessing Ken's sincere remorse and efforts to atone, Cody learns a difficult lesson in empathy and forgiveness, finally accepting Ken as a true friend. Another profound moment in his development occurs when he is forced to destroy the enemy MarineDevimon to protect a hospital full of children. The act deeply unsettles him, as it forces him to confront the harsh reality that sometimes, in the fight for justice, difficult and morally complex choices must be made.

As a DigiDestined, Cody possesses a D-3 Digivice and wields two Digi-Eggs, or Digimentals. He holds the Digi-Egg of Knowledge, which allows Armadillomon to Armor Digivolve into the drill-wielding insect Digimon, Digmon. He also holds the Digi-Egg of Reliability, which allows his partner to Armor Digivolve into the aquatic Submarimon. Alongside his life as a DigiDestined, Cody is dedicated to the practice of kendo, a martial art taught to him by his grandfather that further reflects his focus on discipline and honor. In the series' epilogue, set in the year 2027, Cody has grown up to become a defense attorney, a profession that perfectly embodies his lifelong commitment to justice. He is shown to be married and has a daughter whose partner is an Upamon, the baby form of Armadillomon.
