Description
Belzebumon, also known as Beelzemon, is a major character in Digimon Tamers, appearing as the Mega-level evolution of the small, mischievous Digimon Impmon. His name and demonic motif are derived from Beelzebub, a name often associated with a powerful demon or the "Lord of the Flies," which reflects his origins as one of the Seven Great Demon Lords representing the sin of Gluttony. In the context of Tamers, Belzebumon is not an ancient, pre-existing demon lord but a specific, flawed form achieved by Impmon through an external power source.
His background is rooted in feelings of inadequacy and bitterness. Prior to his transformation, Impmon was a partner to two young human children, Ai and Mako, but he left them after growing tired of their constant bickering over him. Wandering alone, he developed a deep envy for the strong bonds and evolving power of the main Tamer Digimon. This desire for strength made him vulnerable to the Deva Caturamon, who offered him the ability to warp digivolve to his Mega form. Belzebumon accepted this power, becoming a pawn of the Digimon Sovereign Zhuqiaomon, and was tasked with destroying the Tamers.
The personality of Belzebumon is initially defined by cruelty, arrogance, and an insatiable lust for power. Unlike his previous life as Impmon, who was simply troublesome, Belzebumon is a cold-hearted and merciless monster. He revels in his newfound strength, viewing weaker Digimon as mere sources of data to be absorbed for further power. His pride is immense; he seeks out strong opponents to prove his dominance, yet he has no qualms about annihilating those who stand in his way, regardless of their strength. This stands in contrast to other portrayals of the character in the franchise, who may be aloof or honor-bound, as Belzebumon in Tamers is driven by a raw, uncontrolled hunger for data and victory. His core motivation is to validate his own existence by becoming the strongest, lashing out at a world he felt rejected him.
His role in the story is that of a primary antagonist for a significant portion of the series. He first appears as a terrifying force of nature, effortlessly destroying Chrysalimon and their evolved forms, Infermon, to test his power. His key relationships are defined by violence and a twisted sense of rivalry. He holds a particular animosity toward Takato and Guilmon, whose partnership embodies the trust and emotional strength Impmon always lacked. His most heinous act is the murder of Leomon, a beloved and wise ally to the Tamers. Belzebumon impales Leomon with his Darkness Claw and loads his data, an act that not only increases his power but also shatters the spirit of Leomon's human partner, Jeri. This moment is a pivotal turning point for the character, marking the peak of his villainy and directly triggering Takato and Guilmon's dark evolution into Megidramon and their subsequent Biomerge into Gallantmon.
Following his brutal battle with Gallantmon, which ends in his defeat, Belzebumon is unexpectedly spared by a grief-stricken but merciful Jeri. This act of compassion shatters his worldview. He wanders the Digital World as a broken, emotionally drained shell, haunted by what he has done. This vulnerability leads to him being ambushed and drained of his power by the Chrysalimon he had previously tormented, reverting him to a wounded Impmon. This marks the beginning of his redemption arc. After being found and cared for by Rika and Renamon, he eventually reunites with his original human partners, Ai and Mako, who apologize for their past behavior, allowing Impmon to heal emotionally.
His final development occurs during the battle against the D-Reaper in the real world. Driven by a deep desire to atone for his sins, particularly for the suffering he caused Jeri, Impmon rushes into battle. His resolve, combined with the love and support of Ai and Mako, allows him to achieve a new form: Belzebumon Blast Mode. In this state, his eyes turn from red to green, he gains angelic-like black wings, and his toy gun transforms into a powerful cannon called the Death Slinger or Positron Gun. This mode represents his spirit and power coming into balance, transforming him from a flawed, villainous demon into a noble, if still grim, anti-hero. As Belzebumon Blast Mode, he fights alongside the Tamers, using his immense power to protect them and desperately trying to rescue Jeri from within the D-Reaper, showcasing his complete character shift from selfish destroyer to selfless protector.
In terms of notable abilities, Belzebumon is a fast and devastating fighter. He wields two signature shotgun-like weapons named Berenjena, using a rapid-fire attack called Double Impact. His claws are also lethal weapons, capable of executing his Darkness Claw technique, which he used to kill Leomon. He rides a sentient, demonic motorcycle called Behemoth, which grants him incredible speed and was originally a rampaging machine before he tamed it. A unique aspect of Belzebumon in this series is his ability to temporarily gain the attacks of any Digimon whose data he has absorbed. After loading the data of Leomon and the Deva Makuramon, he briefly demonstrates the ability to use Leomon's Fist of the Beast King and Makuramon's Primal Orb. In his ultimate Blast Mode, his primary weapon becomes the Corona Blaster (or Death Slinger), which he can fire as a devastating beam in his Corona Destroyer attack, allowing him to fight on par with the most powerful agents of the D-Reaper.
