TV-Series
Description
Chiyo Mihama, often called Chiyo-chan by her friends, is one of the main characters in Azumanga Daioh. She is a child prodigy who has skipped five grades, entering the tenth grade, which is the first year of high school in Japan, at just ten years old. Despite being the youngest in her class by a significant margin, she remains at the top academically and is noted for her intelligence and sense of responsibility. Her small stature is a notable physical trait; she stands at 133 centimeters tall at the beginning of the series, which is about 4 feet 4 inches.

In terms of personality, Chiyo is cheerful, kind-hearted, and generous to a fault. She acts as a peacemaker among her often-bickering friends and is always willing to help others with their schoolwork. However, she retains the naivety, desires, and fears of a child, which creates a central source of humor and character depth. While she is intellectually advanced, she is decidedly poor at physical activities and sports, a fact that causes her to lack confidence, as she fears being a burden on her teammates. She is also known for her politeness and uses formal speech patterns, reflecting her well-mannered upbringing. Her family is exceedingly wealthy, living in a large mansion with a summer house, yet she is not spoiled and famously makes her own lunches and prepares breakfast for herself.

Chiyo's motivations often revolve around reconciling her academic genius with her childhood innocence. She is proud of being a high school student and works hard to live up to that status, yet she also longs for the simple fun of elementary school life. She experiences significant height angst, wishing she were taller so people would take her more seriously, which contrasts directly with her friend Sakaki, who wishes she were shorter and less intimidating. Her role in the story is that of a central figure around much of the group's activities revolve, and her home is a frequent gathering place. Her birthday in March is an annual celebration for the main cast.

Chiyo's key relationships are well-defined. She shares a particularly strong bond with Sakaki; Sakaki covets Chiyo's cuteness and closeness with her pet dog, while Chiyo envies Sakaki's height. They also share a love for cute collectibles like Neco Coneco toys. She is also very close to Ayumu Kasuga, known as Osaka, who shares a similar childlike naivety. Osaka is frequently shown daydreaming about Chiyo's distinctive pigtails, imagining they can detach, fly, or speak on their own. Conversely, Chiyo does not get along as well with the hyperactive Tomo Takino, who loves to tease her, much like their teacher Yukari Tanizaki.

Throughout the series, Chiyo develops from a timid ten-year-old into a more mature thirteen-year-old graduate. Although she grows slightly taller by the end, she struggles with the physical and social gaps between herself and her peers. Her character arc culminates in her decision to not take the college entrance exams with her friends, instead planning to attend a university in the United States, a path said to suit students who have skipped grades. In the final moments of the series, she has the last line of dialogue.

Chiyo possesses several notable abilities beyond her academic prowess. She is a skilled cook and enjoys cleaning, finding satisfaction in making things pretty. She is also surprisingly responsible, capable of managing household tasks and even holding a part-time job at a fast-food restaurant, where she handles the cash register accurately. Despite her athletic ineptitude, she is a devoted fan of the Yomiuri Giants baseball team and is fiercely competitive. Her imagination is very active, which makes her dislike stories about painful accidents, a weakness that Tomo exploits for laughs. She also has a well-documented fear of thunder and has developed a deep-seated trauma from riding in a car driven by her teacher, Yukari.
