Description
Sonju is a demon ostracized within demon society for adhering to the Heathen religion, which forbids consuming farm-raised humans. He travels with Mujika, sharing her faith and centuries-long exile. As the younger brother of Queen Legravalima and Lord Leuvis, he belongs to the demon royal family. Over 1,000 years ago, a priest taught him the old faith before being executed for defying the Promise. Sonju's refusal to eat human meat caused physical degeneration and imprisonment despite his royal status. After 700 years, Mujika's blood restored his form during a palace attack, and Leuvis allowed their escape. Since then, Sonju and Mujika became fugitives, offering their blood to prevent demon degeneration in others.
In appearance, Sonju is relatively tall and lean, with dark gray or blue skin. He has short, spiky dark red hair with two long strands framing his face and a central forehead horn. He wears a hooded cloak, a silver face mask that reveals sharp canines when removed, and has polydactyl hands (six fingers) which are bandaged.
Sonju presents a stoic, composed demeanor, often intimidating others but showing care for the orphans' safety. His primary motivation is to resume hunting "wild" humans—those born outside farms—once the Promise is broken, a practice his religion permits. He hides this desire behind a helpful façade, sadistically anticipating future hunts. He demonstrates loyalty to Mujika and later develops respect for Emma's resolve.
His abilities include expert archery and spear combat, enabling him to eliminate threats swiftly. After drinking Mujika's blood, he gains "Evil Blood" properties, retaining sapience without consuming humans and curing degeneration in other demons through his blood.
Sonju and Mujika encounter Emma, Ray, and the Grace Field escapees in the forest. While Mujika initially suggests returning the children for rewards, Sonju insists on aiding their escape to foster future wild human populations. He shelters the orphans, treats Emma's injury, teaches survival skills, and guides them toward Shelter B06-32. After their departure, he confides in Mujika his hope that the children will end the Promise.
Later, he rescues Emma from demons and assists her group in the Demon Village, using his blood to pacify a degenerated demon. He participates in the assault on Grace Field farms, using decoy explosives to infiltrate and defeat demons alongside human allies. During the Imperial Capital Battle, he supports Mujika's rise to queenship, though he prefers wandering over royal duties.
Sonju's relationship with Mujika is central; he acts as her protector. Though their goals occasionally clash—such as Mujika's reluctance toward his hunting desires—they remain allies. He views Emma as brave and trustworthy, teaching her hunting despite seeing her as potential prey. Ray earns his respect for intelligence and protectiveness. Sonju harbors no familial affection for Legravalima, whom he deems a "monster," and maintains a cold relationship with Leuvis despite his past leniency.
In the series' conclusion, he accepts that Emma's new Promise eliminates wild humans, relinquishing his hunting ambitions. He remains at Mujika's side as she governs the reformed demon world.
