Description
Lala-Ru is a mysterious girl who appears as a child but claims to be thousands of years old. She has long blue hair and blue eyes, and she is first encountered sitting alone atop a smokestack watching the sunset. She possesses a pendant that contains a vast reservoir of water, and she has the ability to manipulate water from this source. Using her powers permanently weakens her physical state. She is a very quiet and non-talkative person who prefers solitude and rarely shows emotion. Her long, disillusioning experience with humans has left her feeling little to no emotion toward them.

Her primary motivation is to avoid having her powers used by others, especially by the dictator Hamdo, who obsessively seeks the water in her pendant to fuel his military ambitions. She has learned that initial gratitude for her water often turns into violence when she refuses to continue using it. As a result, she is withdrawn and non-violent, often failing to resist abuse or capture. She enjoys watching the sunset above anything else, and this simple pleasure represents one of the few things she still values.

Lala-Ru is the central figure around which the story revolves. She is the girl Shu tries to save when he is first transported to the desolate, water-starved world. Her pendant makes her the target of Hamdo’s army, and much of the plot involves Shu’s efforts to protect her from those who would exploit her power. Her role is both a catalyst for the journey and a symbol of the world’s lost resources and hope.

Key relationships include Shu, the protagonist who risks his life to protect her despite knowing nothing about her. Through his unwavering kindness and determination, Shu gradually causes Lala-Ru to become more open and protective. Another important relationship is with Sis, a woman who treats Lala-Ru like a daughter, which also helps Lala-Ru begin to trust again. Her relationship with Hamdo is strictly adversarial; he sees her only as a tool to obtain water.

Over the course of the story, Lala-Ru develops from a detached, emotionally numb being into someone who is willing to act on behalf of others. She ultimately uses her power to flood Hellywood and bring water to the world, an act that requires great personal sacrifice. After seeing the sunset for the last time, she vanishes from existence.

Her notable ability is hydrokinesis, the power to control water, which she channels through her pendant. The pendant itself contains a now nearly-depleted water reserve, and its use is directly connected to her vitality. This ability makes her a target for those who see water as a strategic resource in the arid, dying world.
