Hikaru Shidou, known as Lucy in the Latin American Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese dubs of Magic Knight Rayearth, is one of the three main protagonists of the series and returns as a central character in Magic Knight Rayearth 2, the second season. She is a fourteen-year-old eighth-grader who, along with her companions Umi Ryuuzaki and Fuu Hououji, is summoned from Tokyo to the magical world of Cephiro to become a Magic Knight. In her original world, Lucy lives with her parents and three older brothers and helps run a kendo school. She has a beloved dog named Hikari. She serves as the de facto leader of the Magic Knights, with her fiery spirit often inspiring those around her. Her role in the story of Rayearth 2 involves returning to Cephiro to defend it from invading nations such as Autozam, Fahren, and Chizeta, as well as battling a mysterious entity named Nova, who resembles her and embodies her darker impulses. Key relationships include her close friendship with Umi and Fuu, with whom she forms an unbreakable bond. She develops romantic feelings for Lantis, the younger brother of the former antagonist Zagato. She also forms a complex and sympathetic connection with Eagle Vision, the leader of Autozam, despite them being on opposing sides. Throughout the second season, Lucy experiences significant development. She matures from a somewhat impulsive girl into a more thoughtful young woman who grapples with heavy moral questions. Her greatest growth comes when she is chosen as a candidate to become the new Pillar of Cephiro. Instead of accepting the traditional system of a single sacrificed ruler, she chooses to abolish the Pillar system entirely, desiring a future where all worlds share their joys and struggles together. Her notable abilities are tied to the element of fire. She wields fire-based spells and commands the Mashin Rayearth, a wolf-like fire-elemental guardian mecha. She is also a skilled practitioner of kendo, which translates into her sword fighting as a Magic Knight. Her signature spells include Arrow of Fire and Crimson Lightning.
