Description
Anna Kyoyama is the fiancée and later wife of Yoh Asakura, serving as a primary character in the story. She is a second-generation itako, a traditional Japanese shaman whose specialty is channeling spirits. Her abilities are so refined that she can summon a spirit from any location, including realms of the afterlife that are typically beyond the reach of ordinary shamans.
Anna was abandoned as a young girl by her biological parents, who grew fearful of her powerful and uncontrollable shamanic gifts. Her most troubling ability was an involuntary form of mind-reading known as reishi, which forced her to absorb the negative thoughts and emotions of everyone around her. This constant assault of negativity filled her with hatred, and that hatred would unconsciously manifest as violent oni, or demonic ogres. Left on Mount Osore, a volcanic site associated with the spirit world, she was found by Kino Asakura, Yoh's grandmother. Kino took Anna in as an apprentice, gave her the surname Kyoyama, and recognizing her immense potential, arranged for her to one day marry her grandson Yoh.
The defining event of her life occurred when she and Yoh were ten years old. While visiting Mount Osore, Yoh was attacked by one of the oni spawned from Anna's anguish. Instead of fleeing, he persistently tried to befriend her. His positive influence gradually began to open her heart. During a New Year's Eve trip to a crowded temple, the overwhelming selfish desires of the mass of people caused Anna to lose control, summoning an enormous and intelligent oni called the Oh-Oni. The creature kidnapped her and attempted to use her power to absorb the spirits of Mount Osore. To save her, Yoh's guardian spirit, Matamune, sacrificed his physical form to give Yoh the strength to destroy the Oh-Oni. Yoh's willingness to sacrifice everything for her allowed Anna to admit that despite her deep-seated resentment toward the world, she had come to love him.
On the surface, Anna presents a personality that is aggressive, decisive, and often cold. She is a pragmatic person who speaks her mind without hesitation and can seem harsh or even cruel. This is most evident in the brutal training regimen she imposes on Yoh, which he frequently compares to torture. However, this exterior masks a deep and genuine care for those she considers important, particularly Yoh. Her motivation is rooted in gratitude for having been saved from her own darkness; she believes it is her duty as his future wife to train him relentlessly so he can achieve his dream of becoming the Shaman King. She is dedicated to becoming the ultimate Shaman Queen at his side, and she rarely loses her composure because she has absolute confidence in his abilities. While she is extremely possessive of Yoh and intimidates him more than any enemy ever could, his promise to her is his greatest motivation to keep fighting.
Within the story, Anna acts as Yoh's primary mentor and trainer, driving him to become stronger for the Shaman Fight tournament. She relocates to Tokyo to oversee his development, often using her infamous physical slaps to keep him and his friends in line. Despite her role as a supporter, her own power is formidable. She shows no fear of the primary antagonist, Hao Asakura, even slapping him when he insults her. In response, Hao becomes fascinated by her, both because of her immense strength and because she bears a resemblance to his mother from a thousand years prior. Her most notable feat of strength is capturing and sealing Hao's two powerful shikigami guardians, Zenki and Kouki, and then forcing them to become her own spirit allies. Her key relationships also include her teacher and grandmother-in-law Kino Asakura, and her friends Manta Oyamada and Tamao Tamamura, who are often on the receiving end of her legendary left-handed slap.
Anna's development from a lonely, frightened child isolated by her powers to a fiercely dedicated and confident woman is central to her character. She evolves from being a victim of her abilities to a master who uses them to protect her new family. After the conclusion of the main events, she marries Yoh and takes his surname, Asakura. In later stories, she becomes the mother of their son, Hana Asakura, and her protective nature extends to her role as a parent, though she retains her pragmatic and demanding edge.
As a shaman, Anna possesses tremendous spiritual energy and mastery over several techniques. Her primary tool is a set of one thousand and eighty prayer beads, forged from the body of the Oh-Oni she and Yoh defeated. She can use these beads to enter a trance, bind spirits, and focus her power. Her techniques include Kuchiyose, the invocation of spirits; Goma Choubuku, a subjugation technique used to control powerful demons like Zenki and Kouki; and the ability to reflect curses back upon the one who cast them. Although she apparently loses her involuntary mind-reading ability after the destruction of the Oh-Oni, her other powers remain immense. In addition to her spiritual might, Anna is deceptively strong physically and is not afraid to use her fists, making her physical slaps a feared and famous trademark.
