Description
Horohoro, whose real name is Usui Horokeu, is a young shaman from the Ainu tribe of Hokkaido, Japan. He travels to Tokyo to compete in the Shaman Fight, driven by a powerful and personal dream. Forming his Oversoul through a snowboard, his abilities center on manipulating ice and snow, channeled through his loyal spirit companion, Kororo.

On the surface, Horohoro presents himself as a hot-blooded, competitive, and cheerful boy, typical of many fighting manga characters. He is passionate about nature and deeply proud of his Ainu heritage. He often becomes emotional, is easily provoked into arguments, and maintains a constant, bickering rivalry with his teammate Tao Ren, whom he nonetheless considers a close friend. Beneath this lively exterior, however, Horohoro carries a heavy burden of guilt and sorrow. He is secretive about his past and becomes enraged when addressed by his birth name, a name he feels unworthy of.

This dark side of his personality stems from a tragic childhood event. His nickname, Horohoro, was given to him by a transfer student named Tamuko, with whom he formed a close bond after both found themselves outsiders in their community. Tamuko loved a field of butterbur plants, but when her family's construction business planned to destroy the area, tribal elders forbade Horohoro from seeing her. Consumed by shame and pressure, he began to ignore her. One day, Tamuko followed him into the snowy mountains seeking answers, where she became lost and froze to death. Horohoro blames himself entirely for her death. His stated dream of becoming Shaman King to create a vast field of butterbur is, in truth, a means to atone for his past and fulfill the wish he could not grant for Tamuko. It is later revealed that Kororo, his tiny, cheerful spirit ally, is actually the transformed soul of Tamuko herself, who chose to become a nature spirit to stay by his side.

Horohoro serves as the first opponent and one of the earliest and most steadfast allies of the main protagonist, Yoh Asakura. Though he loses their initial match, he quickly becomes a core member of Yoh's friend group and an essential figure in his team. During the Shaman Fight's main tournament, he is forced to form a team named "The Ren" alongside Tao Ren and Chocolove McDonell, a trio that highlights both his competitiveness and his growing reliability as a comrade. His key relationships include his constant, bickering friendship with Ren, his respect for Yoh's strength and kindness, and the intense training he receives from his younger, more formidable sister, Pirika, who supports his dream. His father, Usui Rikan, is a distant figure whom Horohoro believes sees him as a disappointment.

Throughout the story, Horohoro undergoes significant development. His initial brashness and feelings of powerlessness are constantly challenged. A pivotal moment occurs when he witnesses poachers killing a bear for sport, an act that violates the Ainu principle of taking a life only with gratitude and purpose. This triggers a major evolution in his power, allowing him to use a new medium, an Ikupasuy given by his sister. Eventually, his potential is recognized by the Gandhara shaman group, who select him as one of the Five Elemental Warriors, granting him control over a great spirit, the Spirit of Rain. He undergoes intense training, even dying and being reborn, to master this power, solidifying his role as a crucial warrior in the final battle and demonstrating significant personal growth from a guilt-ridden boy into a powerful and principled fighter.

As a shaman, Horohoro's notable abilities are based on the element of ice. His primary technique involves creating an Oversoul by fusing Kororo with his snowboard, which he uses to freeze moisture in the air. His attacks include creating ice spikes with "Mososoruppe" and generating a massive "All-Swallowing Avalanche" to overwhelm opponents. He can also form an ice gauntlet on his arm, known as the "Nipopo Punch," which freezes and shatters anything it strikes. After receiving the Ikupasuy from his sister, he develops a more refined and powerful shield-like Oversoul. Upon awakening as an Elemental Warrior, his furyoku, or spiritual power, is measured at an impressive 120,000, making him one of the most powerful human shamans in the series, technically surpassing both Yoh and Ren in raw energy.
