Description
Bijou is a female hamster distinguished by her pristine white fur and her signature blue ribbons, which she always wears to hold her two pigtails in place. Her owner is a girl named Maria, and the two of them originally moved to the neighborhood from France. This backstory is central to her character, and while the English adaptation gives her a pronounced French accent, in the original Japanese version she speaks normally but adds the unique verbal tic dechuwa to the end of her sentences. Her name itself is French for jewel or a small, exquisitely wrought trinket, which reflects her refined and elegant nature.

In terms of personality, Bijou is generally tidy, graceful, and somewhat unworldly, carrying herself with a sense of poise and sophistication. Despite this elegant demeanor, she is not afraid to get dirty or messy when the situation calls for it, demonstrating that her kindness and willingness to help her friends always take precedence over maintaining a pristine appearance. She is consistently described as generous and helpful, embodying a selfless devotion to those she cares about.

The most significant driving force in Bijou's personal story is her persistent romantic fondness for Hamtaro, the main character. This crush is established very early on, with Bijou winking at him after he performs a song and dance in the first episode. Her feelings become more pronounced and obvious as the series progresses, particularly in episodes centered on her emotions, such as when Hamtaro compliments her precious ribbons. However, this affection is largely one-sided. Hamtaro possesses an innocent and childish outlook on love, remaining completely clueless about her romantic interest and generally viewing her as a very close friend or best friend, with his feelings staying platonic. This dynamic leads to several episodes focused on Bijou's attempts to get closer to him. For instance, she tries to arrange dates, though Hamtaro often misunderstands the concept and invites other friends along. She also experiences jealousy and views other female hamsters, such as Sparkle and Lapis, as rivals for his attention, notably competing against them in a Valentine's Day battle. In the video game Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak, the pair are referenced as an actual couple, though this is presented in a way that seems to confuse Hamtaro, adding a layer of inconsistency to their official status.

Beyond her relationship with Hamtaro, Bijou has a strong network of friendships among the other Ham-Hams. Her best friends are Pashmina, Penelope, and Sandy, and the four female hamsters are frequently seen together and share a very close bond. Another key relationship is with Boss, the self-appointed leader of the group. Boss harbors a huge, unrequited crush on Bijou, but she is completely unaware of his feelings. Instead, she sees him as a kind and generous figure, more akin to a big brother, and values his friendship without recognizing his romantic intentions.

Bijou plays a pivotal role in several of the Ham-Hams' larger adventures. A notable example is in one of the animated movies, where she is chosen to be the Snow Princess, a sacred role that requires her to pray in order to restore the missing aurora and bring snow back to a valley. When she is kidnapped by pirates who hate the snow, she demonstrates her inner resilience by keeping her composure and even cooking meals for her captors, highlighting her serene empathy even under duress. This event positions her as the damsel in distress, with Hamtaro racing to rescue her, which serves to spotlight their mutual trust and his courage.

Regarding her abilities, Bijou is not typically known for a specific skill, but she is a fast learner and a capable member of the team. In early media, she was shown to have an interest in knitting, creating fluffy sweaters for her friends, though this trait was later transferred to another character, Barrette. Over the course of the series, Bijou shows subtle development in how she manages her emotions, particularly in balancing her romantic hopes with her supportive nature. After a period of intense jealousy towards Lapis, she is able to move past her feelings and form a close friendship with her once she realizes there was no romantic threat. Throughout it all, she remains a figure of kindness and devotion, consistently mending fences with her rivals and maintaining her role as a loyal and helpful friend to the entire Ham-Ham Gang.
