Description
Ayako Hanabishi is a young woman of twenty-two years who has recently completed her teacher training and holds a college degree. Despite her academic qualifications, she has found it nearly impossible to secure a teaching position. Her fortunes appear to change when she accepts a job offer at a senior high school located on the remote planet of Meldonia, a decision born of professional desperation rather than a sense of adventure. However, upon her arrival, she discovers that the school has been abruptly closed due to severe financial problems, leaving her stranded in deep space without the funds to return to Earth.

As a person, Ayako is characterized by a perpetually pessimistic and gloomy outlook, often assuming the worst in any situation and quickly sinking into despair. Despite being in her twenties, she is remarkably helpless when left to her own devices and possesses a somewhat unworldly, naive demeanor. This naivety is on full display in her interactions with others, as she tends to be trusting and gullible, accepting the flimsy lies told by her companions without question. Nevertheless, at her core, Ayako is a kind and gentle soul who finds it difficult to remain angry with anyone for very long, even as she is drawn into chaotic and dangerous events beyond her control. She often laments that her teacher training is being wasted on a daily basis. A notable quirk in her personality is a hidden talent that contrasts sharply with her generally hapless nature: she possesses an almost unconscious ability to win at gambling.

Within the story, Ayako serves as one of the three protagonists, alongside the high school student Wakana Nanamiya and the mysterious fugitive Paraila. Her primary motivation is simply to find a way back to Earth and return to her parents, a goal she shares with Wakana. She finds herself reluctantly swept along on this journey, often reacting to the escalating turbulence with a mix of distress and passive acceptance, letting the bizarre and dangerous situations wash over her even as she frequently despairs. Her role in the trio is that of the flustered, anxious, and somewhat hapless straight-woman, providing a contrast to the more aggressive personalities of her travel companions.

Ayako's key relationships are defined by her forced proximity to Wakana and Paraila. Initially, both Ayako and Wakana are quiet, but as the danger of their situation becomes clear, Wakana grows more vocal and the two end up bickering frequently. Ayako’s interactions with Paraila highlight her gullibility, as she readily believes the fugitive's convenient falsehoods. Despite the constant trouble they bring into her life, the three women are bound together by their shared goal of reaching Earth and their lack of other options.

While Ayako does not undergo a dramatic transformation, her development is seen in how she endures her predicament. She is a character who is forced to cope with immense stress, which manifests in her becoming highly strung to the point of appearing spacey, and she has a noted tendency to speak in haiku under pressure.

Ayako has a few notable and defining traits. She is severely nearsighted and is almost completely unable to see without her glasses, yet she has a recurring habit of losing them and struggling to find them again. This physical vulnerability contributes to her overall air of helplessness and makes her an unlikely participant in a galactic chase.
