Description
Cyberdoll Rena is a supporting character from the anime Hand Maid May, where she is one of several cyberdolls who become involved with the protagonist, Kazuya Saotome. Her full model designation is Cf-3357L-JPA. At first glance, Rena appears to be a lost young girl, roughly nine to fourteen years of age, making her the most childlike of the cyberdolls in both appearance and behavior.
Her background is introduced when she is discovered by Kazuya and the cyberdoll May after they encounter her wandering alone in the city. Presenting herself as a child who has run away from home, Kazuya initially takes her to the police, believing her to be a lost human girl. It is later revealed that this is a ruse, as Rena is actually another cyberdoll sent by the Cyberdyne Corporation with the mission to recover the unpaid May. However, her mission takes an unexpected turn when she develops a fondness for Kazuya and his small, squid-like robot creation, Ikariya.
In terms of personality, Rena is best described as a spoiled and capricious child. She is highly emotional, prone to loud and powerful crying fits when she does not get her way, which can be heard from a considerable distance. Her behavior is often driven by immediate desires and a childish sense of jealousy. For example, she becomes envious when she sees that Kazuya has built a device to help the smaller May pour milk and immediately demands that he create something for her as well. Despite her bratty tendencies, she is not malicious. Her actions often stem from a genuine but immature desire for attention and affection, similar to a young child testing boundaries. She can also be playful, finding amusement in using her abilities to cause mischief, such as manipulating traffic lights to make cars swerve for her own entertainment.
Rena's role in the story primarily serves as a minor rival and a source of comic relief. Although originally sent to retrieve May, she chooses not to return her to the company. Instead, she decides to stay, eventually moving in with Kazuya's landlord's daughter, Kasumi Tani. Her presence adds to the growing number of female characters in Kazuya's life, creating further complications and humorous situations. Her relationship with Kazuya is not romantic but rather paternal; she looks up to him and seeks his approval and attention in a way that mimics a father-daughter dynamic. She also fiercely protects the robot Ikariya, whom she adores, and considers May a friend, even deciding to abandon her initial mission because May is a friend to Ikariya.
Regarding her development, Rena has a small but notable arc about learning empathy and the consequences of her actions. After causing a traffic disturbance for fun, Kazuya scolds her, explaining that she upset people. She initially does not understand why her actions were wrong and runs away crying. Later, after Ikariya sprays her with ink, making her sad, she tells the robot that it is not nice to upset people. In that moment, she has an epiphany about her own earlier behavior, beginning to understand that her actions have an emotional impact on others. Even with this minor growth, she remains a fun-loving and somewhat spoiled kid-bot throughout the series.
As a cyberdoll, Rena possesses several notable abilities. She can interface with and control electronic devices, such as traffic lights, demonstrating a common capability among cyberdolls. Her most distinctive and powerful ability is her extraordinarily loud and high-pitched yell, which is described as ear-splitting and even powerful enough to shatter glass. This cry is typically triggered by emotional distress or frustration, acting as both a weapon and a potent expression of her childish temperament. Her childlike appearance is consistent with her model number, where "CF" likely denotes a "child form" unit.
