Description
Joe Kido, known in Japan as Jou Kido, is one of the main characters from the Digimon Adventure series and its subsequent sequels and films. He is the oldest of the original group of DigiDestined children and is partnered with the Digimon Gomamon. He is the bearer of the Crest of Reliability, which is also referred to as Sincerity, Honesty, or Faithfulness in different versions of the series.

Joe is from a family with a long-standing medical tradition, as his father planned for all of his sons to become doctors, a practice that had continued in the family since the Edo period. He has two older brothers, Shin and Shuu, who became a single brother named Jim in the English dub. Growing up in Hikarigaoka, Joe witnessed the battle between Greymon and Parrotmon as a child, an event that led to him being chosen as a DigiDestined.

In his first adventure, Joe is twelve years old and in the sixth grade at a private elementary school. He is characterized by a highly anxious and high-strung personality, often worrying about the safety of the group and the potential consequences of their actions. His "safety first" attitude frequently makes him the voice of reason among his more impulsive friends, though this caution often leads to him being teased as a "stick in the mud," especially by his own partner, Gomamon, who tries to get him to lighten up. Despite his nervous disposition and self-doubt, Joe has a profound sense of responsibility as the eldest member of the team, which compels him to take charge and protect the others. This sense of duty is the core of his character, leading him to commit selfless and brave acts even when he is afraid. His journey throughout the series involves learning to balance his intense academic ambitions and family expectations with his duties as a DigiDestined.

Joe's primary motivation is to become a doctor, following his family's tradition, which drives him to focus heavily on his studies from a young age. However, he also feels a strong obligation to fulfill his role as a DigiDestined and protect both the human and Digital Worlds. This creates a central conflict for him, particularly in later series, as he struggles to balance his personal goals with the demands of being a hero. He is often shown prioritizing his entrance exam preparations, which causes friction with his friends and Gomamon, who feel he is neglecting his responsibilities.

Joe's role in the story is often that of the reliable big brother and the pragmatic planner. He tries to steer the group away from reckless actions and is frequently the one to voice concerns that others ignore. His intelligence and cautious nature make him a valuable asset in strategizing. One of his most significant acts of courage occurs when he risks his own life to save Takeru "T.K." Takaishi from drowning in a battle against MegaSeadramon. This selfless act activates his Crest of Reliability for the first time, allowing Gomamon to digivolve into his Ultimate form, Zudomon, and defeat the enemy. Later, when Mimi Tachikawa loses her will to fight after the death of several Digimon allies, Joe chooses to stay behind with her, demonstrating his compassion and reliability. In the epilogue of Digimon Adventure 02, it is shown that Joe fulfills his dream by becoming a doctor, but he specializes in treating Digimon, working in the Digital World.

Key relationships for Joe include his partnership with Gomamon, who acts as a foil to his serious and worried nature, constantly encouraging him to be more optimistic. During Digimon Adventure tri., this bond is severely tested when Joe distances himself from the team to focus on his high school entrance exams, leading to a temporary separation from Gomamon before they reconcile. He also has a notable relationship with Mimi Tachikawa; during a difficult period, he stays with her when she is grieving, hinting at a close, though unspecified, bond. In Digimon Adventure 02, he takes on a mentoring role for Cody Hida, helping the younger DigiDestined find his Digi-Egg of Sincerity and teaching him about responsibility. His family, particularly the pressure from his father and older brothers, is another major relationship that shapes his motivations and internal conflicts.

Joe undergoes significant character development throughout the franchise. He starts as a nervous, self-conscious boy who doubts his own capabilities but gradually learns to embrace his reliability and courage. In Digimon Adventure 02, as a middle school student, he is busier with his studies but still contributes when necessary, helping the new generation of DigiDestined while grappling with his own path. In Digimon Adventure tri., he is an eighteen-year-old high school student, disillusioned and questioning his role as a DigiDestined, believing that he must focus solely on his future career. This internal struggle leads to an emotional crisis, but he ultimately learns to integrate both parts of his identity, realizing that being reliable means being there for his friends as well as pursuing his personal goals. By the end of the series, he matures into a confident and dedicated doctor who applies his sense of responsibility to the unique field of Digimon medicine.

Joe himself does not fight, but his partner Gomamon provides all of their combat abilities. Gomamon is a Rookie-level Digimon who can summon a school of fish called Marching Fishes to attack or act as a raft. Gomamon digivolves to the Champion-level Ikkakumon, a large, walrus-like creature that can fire a missile from its horn in an attack called Harpoon Vulcan and freeze enemies with its Icicle Coat attack. Ikkakumon can further digivolve to the Ultimate-level Zudomon, a powerful, bipedal walrus armed with a hammer made from a chunk of chrome digizoid called the Thor Hammer. Zudomon can generate electricity and powerful shockwaves with his hammer. In later series and films, Zudomon can achieve a Mega-level digivolution into Vikemon, a warrior Digimon whose attacks include bringing the atmosphere to absolute zero. By May 2000, Joe had given up the power of his Crest, which temporarily prevented Gomamon from reaching the Ultimate level of Zudomon.
