Description
Ichirō Ōgami is a fictional character from the Sakura Wars franchise, serving as the primary protagonist of the original games. He was born on January 3, 1903, in the Tochikigen region. After graduating from the Imperial Naval Academy, where he was a young ensign, Ōgami was given an unusual assignment: he was chosen to lead the all-female Imperial Combat Revue's Flower Division. This decision came after he proved his capability during a test piloting a prototype Koubu, a type of spiritual-powered combat mech. His official role was to serve as the unit's commander, a position that would later see him promoted to lieutenant junior grade.
In terms of personality, Ōgami is depicted as a young man of gentle, understanding, and friendly character. He is deeply devoted to his mission and to the members of his team. Outside of combat, he diligently takes care of the Flower Division's members, participating actively in their theatrical performances, which serve as a public cover for their military operations. While he is the main character of the video games, he plays a comparatively minor role in the anime and manga adaptations of the story.
Ōgami's primary motivation stems from his sense of duty and his role as a unifying force. He is one of the few men in the military with strong spiritual energy, making him uniquely suited to lead a unit that fights supernatural demonic forces attacking Tokyo. His purpose is to act as a cohesive element, bringing together the diverse and strong-willed personalities of the Flower Division to make them an effective team. His key relationships are at the heart of his story, as he forms strong bonds with each member of the Flower Division. For instance, he initially had friction with the unit's original leader, Maria Tachibana, whose cold logic clashed with his approach before they settled into a commander and second-in-command dynamic. Other notable relationships include the young psychic Iris, who declares she will marry him when she turns twenty, and Orihime Soletta, who initially held a grudge against all Japanese men but grew close to Ōgami after he helped reconcile her with her estranged father.
Throughout his development, Ōgami grows from a newly assigned officer into a proven leader and skilled combatant. He eventually came to possess the Shintou-Mekkyaku, one of four legendary spiritual swords, which was given to him by the injured Captain Yoneda. Later, together with his close ally Sakura Shinguji, he obtained the Shinken-Shirahadori and Koutou-Mukei swords to perform a sacred ritual known as the Ni-ken Ni-tou no Gi. As a fighter, Ōgami is an excellent strategist, noted for being highly reactive and capable of making critical decisions in the heat of battle to ensure his team's victory. He pilots his own Koubu in combat, using his spiritual energy to fight against the forces of evil.
