Description
Queen Metalia, also referred to as Metallia, is the true leader and mastermind of the Dark Kingdom in the Sailor Moon series. She is a malignant, amorphous energy being with no fixed physical form, often depicted as a shadowy, formless entity. Her origins differ between versions: in the original manga, she was born from radioactive activity within the Sun and later emerged as a primordial evil; in the anime, she is described as an ancient evil force from the Sun that descended to Earth. She is the ultimate source of power for Queen Beryl and the driving force behind the Dark Kingdom’s assault on both the Moon Kingdom and the modern world.
Metallia’s personality is portrayed as utterly devoid of warmth, empathy, or moral restraint. She is a being of pure hunger and destruction, motivated by an insatiable desire for energy and power. She does not display complex emotions or personal ambitions beyond the need to feed, grow stronger, and annihilate all that opposes her. Her motivations are simple and elemental: to absorb the energy of the Silver Crystal and of all life on Earth, and to extend her dominion across the universe. She treats her followers, even Queen Beryl, as disposable tools, showing no loyalty or gratitude. In the anime, she scornfully possesses Beryl when the queen is fatally wounded, transforming her into the monstrous Super Beryl.
Metallia’s role in the story is that of the hidden final antagonist of the first major story arc. She is the dark force that corrupted the Earth witch Beryl in the age of the Silver Millennium, exploiting Beryl’s jealousy of Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion’s love to instigate a war that destroyed the Moon Kingdom. After Queen Serenity sealed her away using the Silver Crystal, Metallia remained in suspended animation until the 20th century, when Beryl rediscovered her at the North Pole’s D-Point and freed her. From then on, Metallia directed Beryl and the Four Kings of Heaven to harvest human life energy and to seek the Silver Crystal so that she could fully revive and conquer the world. She eventually manifests directly in the final battles, either by merging with Beryl (in the anime) or by taking over the body of the reincarnated Endymion (in the manga and Crystal). She is ultimately destroyed when Sailor Moon channels the full power of the Silver Crystal and the combined energy of the Sailor Guardians.
Key relationships include her bond with Queen Beryl, who serves as her high priestess, commander, and avatar. Metallia gives Beryl her power and guidance but discards her without hesitation when she is no longer useful. In the manga and Crystal, Metallia also exploits Endymion by inhabiting his body after he is captured, using him as a vessel. She has no other meaningful connections; her generals are merely vassals, and she shows no interest in them. Her direct antagonist is Sailor Moon, who represents the pure, life-affirming power of the Silver Crystal, the very force that counters Metallia’s entropy and darkness.
In terms of development, Metallia does not undergo character growth in any conventional sense. She begins as a sealed evil and ends as a fully awakened threat that is ultimately vanquished. However, her gradual awakening and increasing influence over the story create a mounting sense of danger. Her defeat marks the first major triumph of Sailor Moon and establishes the pattern of the series: love and self-sacrifice overcoming primordial chaos.
Notable abilities include her capacity to drain and absorb life energy, her ability to create and control youma (monsters), her psychic powers to brainwash or curse others, and her power to corrupt and manipulate vulnerable human hearts. She can also possess living beings, granting them immense dark power at the cost of their will. In the anime, her power is directly linked to the Silver Crystal—each use of the Crystal strengthens Metallia, and vice versa, creating a dangerous feedback loop. In the live-action series, her goal is simpler: she seeks to destroy the Earth by unleashing volatile energy and spontaneously generating youma from the ground. Her amorphous nature makes her nearly impossible to harm by conventional means, but the purified energy of the Silver Crystal proves to be her undoing in all versions.
