Description
Ami Mizuno, also known as Sailor Mercury, is a teenage Japanese schoolgirl who transforms into a Sailor Guardian, a supernatural fighter dedicated to protecting the solar system from evil. She is the first Guardian discovered by Sailor Moon and serves as the strategic brains of the group, possessing genius-level intellect often rumored to be an IQ of 300. A top student who dedicates most of her free time to studying, her dream is to become a doctor like her mother. Born on September 10, she lives with her mother, a busy doctor, while her parents are divorced and her father, an artist, lives away from home though he sends postcards on her birthday.
Ami is characterized by her extraordinary intelligence, shy and reserved nature, and a kind, gentle, and deeply loyal personality. Her classmates sometimes mistake her quiet demeanor for snobbery, making it difficult for her to make friends until she meets Usagi Tsukino, who recognizes her true, friendly nature. She is generally the most level-headed member of the group, acting as a voice of reason and disliking quarrels and unnecessary conflict. While she loves academics, especially mathematics, she also has a hidden appreciation for art and romance novels. Her hobbies include playing chess and swimming.
As Sailor Mercury, her primary role is that of a strategist and information analyst. She uses a handheld supercomputer and a visor called the Mercury Goggles to scan environments, track enemies, and identify weaknesses. Her signature early attack is Shabon Spray, which creates a dense fog to obscure enemy vision. She later develops offensive water and ice attacks, including Shine Aqua Illusion, which can freeze enemies, and with the Mercury Rod, Mercury Aqua Rhapsody. She can achieve more powerful forms such as Super Sailor Mercury, using the transformation phrase Mercury Crystal Power, Make Up.
Her most important relationship is with Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon), whose friendship helps Ami come out of her shell and gain confidence. Her loyalty to Sailor Moon is absolute. She also shares close bonds with the other Inner Sailor Guardians: Rei Hino, Makoto Kino, and Minako Aino.
