Description
Otaru Mamiya is the central character of the anime Saber Marionette J. He is a teenaged resident of Japoness, a city-state on the planet Terra II that is modeled on feudal Japan and whose population is entirely male. He lives on his own in modest circumstances and supports himself through a variety of small jobs, including selling fish and sweets and doing handcraft work such as making paper umbrellas. He was raised with the guidance of a local martial arts instructor and trained in the Aoi school of martial arts, which gives him a solid foundation for combat despite his ordinary daily life. He has a distinctive appearance, including a two-tone hairstyle that is lighter in the front and darker in the back.

In personality, Otaru is laid-back, kind, and hardworking, with a direct and spirited manner that reflects his upbringing as a straightforward, old-fashioned city boy. He can be stubborn and quick to act, and he is not easily intimidated, but his warmth shows in how he treats others, especially those whom society views as beneath consideration. One of his defining traits is his attitude toward marionettes, the feminine androids that serve as substitutes for women on Terra II. While most people regard them as mere machines, Otaru instinctively treats them as individuals with feelings and value.

His life changes when he accidentally awakens Lime, a marionette with an unprecedented ability to express emotion. He later awakens two more such marionettes, Cherry and Bloodberry. These three possess special heart-like devices called maiden circuits that grant them emotion and free will. Otaru becomes their guardian and caretaker, and the four of them form a kind of family, sharing a small home even though he has little money. He is initially overwhelmed and somewhat embarrassed by the affectionate and sometimes romantic behavior of the three girls, and he returns their feelings only platonically and equally, without favoring any one of them.

Otaru's motivations center on protecting his family and doing what he believes is right. He works hard to keep the household running, and he is drawn into larger conflicts when the shogun of Japoness, Ieyasu Tokugawa, reveals the significance of the three girls and entrusts their fate to him. From that point on, he plays a central role in opposing Faust, the ruler of Galtland, who seeks the girls' maiden circuits for his own ambitions. His willingness to treat the marionettes as people brings him into conflict with the dominant social views of his world, and he repeatedly stands up for their right to be seen as more than tools.

His relationships with the three girls shape the story. Lime is cheerful, naive, and energetic, clinging to Otaru like a child and providing much of the household's liveliness. Cherry is gentle, refined, and domestically skilled, acting as cook and homemaker, though she also harbors romantic feelings for him. Bloodberry is bold, mature, and physically powerful, and she openly pursues a future with Otaru, often trying to win his affection. Each girl relates to him differently, and he gives them the emotional guidance they need to develop as individuals. He also has a complicated relationship with Mitsurugi Hanagata, a wealthy young man who pursues him romantically and whose reckless driving sets off the chain of events that leads Otaru to Lime; the two frequently clash, but Hanagata eventually becomes a companion.

Over the course of the story, Otaru grows from an ordinary street vendor into a nationally known figure who is called upon in times of crisis. He becomes more confident in his role as the girls' guardian and more certain that they are genuine people deserving of love and respect. Near the end of the series, his bond with them is tested when Lime, Cherry, and Bloodberry choose to offer their fully matured maiden circuits in order to free Lorelei, the last surviving woman from the original colony ship, and Otaru must accept their decision. His care for the three marionettes is the emotional core of his journey, and their growth as emotional beings is closely tied to his treatment of them. In later entries of the franchise, he continues to build a settled life, eventually establishing his own home and running a fish shop.

In terms of abilities, Otaru is a capable martial artist who can hold his own in fights despite his modest build. His preferred weapon is a sai, which can extend its blade into a short sword and whose handle can be used to pull his friends to safety. He is also a skilled craftsman and a tireless worker, using his practical talents to support himself and his unusual family. His compassion is central to his role in the story, as it is through his acceptance and guidance that the three marionettes are able to mature emotionally and become fully realized individuals.
