Description
Chaozu is a character from the Dragon Ball manga and the anime series Dragon Ball Z. He is a small, pale white-skinned human with distinctive red cheeks, thick eyebrows, and black eyes. Like his close friend Krillin, Chaozu does not have a visible nose. He is quite short in stature and has a single, wiry hair on his head that is only seen when he removes his hat. Throughout most of his early appearances, he wears the uniform of the Crane School of martial arts, later changing into a white tank top and eventually a blue Hanfu-style robe with a white cloak and pants.
Chaozu was originally a student of the evil Master Shen, also known as the Crane Hermit, alongside his lifelong best friend, Tien Shinhan. Under Master Shen's tutelage, Chaozu specialized in psychic abilities, including telepathy and telekinesis. He was introduced as an antagonist during the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, where he was pitted against Krillin. During their match, Chaozu proved to be a formidable fighter, using techniques like the Dodon Ray and his psychic powers to attack Krillin's internal organs. However, he lost the match due to a simple trick involving a basic math question, as he needed to use his fingers to count, which interrupted his psychic grip on his opponent.
Despite his start as a villain, Chaozu's personality is shown to be fairly quiet, brave, and deeply devoted to his friends, especially Tien. He is willing to help others whenever possible and follows Tien loyally, but he will ignore Tien's pleas if he believes his own plan is the right course of action. He has a childish nature, as seen when he mocks Krillin for shortcomings he himself possesses, and he struggles to understand basic humor or solve simple math problems. After Master Shen orders Chaozu to kill Tien and Goku during the tournament finals, Chaozu refuses, demonstrating a strong moral compass and loyalty to Tien over his master. This act leads him and Tien to abandon the Crane School and become allies of Goku and Master Roshi. His motivations are primarily driven by his friendship with Tien and a desire to protect the Earth alongside the other Z-Fighters, often courageously engaging enemies far more powerful than himself.
Chaozu's role in the story is that of a supporting character and a member of the Z-Fighters. After the tournament, he helps in the desperate search for the Dragon Balls to resurrect Krillin, who was killed by one of King Piccolo's minions. During the confrontation with King Piccolo himself, Chaozu attempts to wish for the Demon King's destruction using the Dragon Balls but is killed by Piccolo before he can finish his sentence. He is later revived after Goku defeats Piccolo. Years later, when the Saiyans Vegeta and Nappa arrive on Earth, Chaozu trains on Kami's Lookout to prepare for the battle. During the fight, he attempts to use a self-destruction technique, which he had copied from the Saibamen, in a brave but futile attempt to kill Nappa and save his friends. The explosion does no damage to Nappa, and Chaozu perishes. He is later revived again, this time by the Namekian Dragon Balls. In later sagas, Chaozu's role diminishes significantly as his power level does not increase as dramatically as the other warriors. He wishes to continue fighting but is often sidelined due to the increasing danger of the enemies. He continues to train with Tien and, in the Majin Buu Saga, both are shown to be strong enough to survive Super Buu's Human Extinction Attack, which destroys almost all life on Earth.
Key relationships define much of Chaozu's character. His bond with Tien Shinhan is the most significant; they are nearly inseparable, with Chaozu showing absolute devotion to his best friend. He views Tien as a role model and follows him loyally, while Tien acts as a protector and mentor figure. Initially a rival to Krillin during the tournament, Chaozu eventually becomes a trusted ally and friend to him, as well as to Goku, Yamcha, and the other Z-Fighters.
Chaozu possesses a variety of notable abilities, many of which stem from his psychic powers. He can use telepathy to speak with others mentally and telekinesis to manipulate objects, paralyze opponents, or even directly attack their internal organs. He is also capable of flight using his ki and can perform energy attacks such as the Dodon Ray, a powerful beam fired from the index finger. One of his most dramatic techniques is the self-destruction or suicide attack, which he used in a desperate attempt to kill Nappa. Other abilities include the Drill Attack, where he spins rapidly and launches himself headfirst at an opponent, and the ability to mimic techniques after seeing them only once. He can also transfer his own ki to another person to restore their strength. Despite these skills, Chaozu often finds himself outmatched by the primary antagonists of the series, though he always demonstrates remarkable courage in the face of overwhelming power.
