Description
Ninzaburo Shiratori is an inspector in the First Division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. He comes from a wealthy family and originally aspired to become a lawyer, studying diligently and memorizing laws by heart. A childhood incident changed his path: he witnessed a young girl confronting two juveniles trying to steal manga from a bookstore, and when the offenders pushed her, he stepped forward and recited the legal provisions for stealing. The girl thanked him by making a sakura petal pattern from a straw wrapper, explaining that the sakura is the symbol of courage for the Japanese police because of the shape of the police badge. Deeply moved, Shiratori decided to become a police officer instead of a lawyer, and he regarded the girl as his childhood love. Years later, when Miwako Sato joined the department, he mistakenly believed she was that girl and pursued her, creating a rivalry with his younger colleague Wataru Takagi. Shiratori was often cocky and possessive during this period, even forming a secret police group to protect Sato from other suitors, and he occasionally abused his police powers in his romantic endeavors. However, he eventually discovered that the true girl from his childhood was Sumiko Kobayashi, a teacher at Teitan Elementary School. Upon learning this, his fixation on Sato dissolved, and he developed a sincere, mutual love with Kobayashi. This relationship helped cure much of his earlier arrogance, and he became noticeably friendlier toward Conan Edogawa, Ai Haibara, and the other Detective Boys as time passed. Shiratori is calm and collected on cases, often more composed than Takagi or Sato, and he performs well when the investigation involves topics related to his upper-class tastes, such as architecture or wine. He enjoys studying architecture, cooking, and collecting wine, with a particular fondness for Romanée-Conti. While he respects Conan’s intelligence for a child, he initially tends to disregard his opinions, though he will take notice if Conan points out something genuinely interesting. His role in the story is that of a supporting police inspector who works alongside Inspector Juzo Megure and frequently participates in high-profile investigations. Overall, Shiratori evolves from an overly confident, love‑driven officer into a more humble and dedicated detective whose personal growth is closely tied to discovering his true first love.
