Description
Inspector Juzo Megure is a veteran police officer who serves as a Police Inspector in Division 1 of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. He is a commanding presence at crime scenes, almost always arriving to interview suspects and oversee the investigative team, which frequently includes subordinates such as Wataru Takagi, Miwako Sato, Ninzaburo Shiratori, and Kazunobu Chiba.

Megure is a man in his early forties who is rarely seen without his trademark fedora. This hat is not merely a fashion choice but serves to hide a scar on his head, an injury he sustained early in his police career. He acquired the scar while protecting a woman named Midori during a hit-and-run investigation; she later became his wife. This personal history has made him self-conscious about the circumstances of his marriage, contributing to his decision to always wear the hat in public.

His background also includes a long-standing professional friendship with the renowned mystery novelist Yusaku Kudo. Before Yusaku's son, Shinichi, became a famous high school detective, Megure would often consult Yusaku for his insight on difficult cases. On many occasions, a young Shinichi would accompany his father, absorbing the deductive techniques that would later define his own career. Megure was also a former superior of private detective Kogoro Mouri during their time together in the district police force.

In personality, Megure is a capable and dedicated officer who genuinely cares for the well-being of his subordinates, though he is known for his occasional shouting fits and short temper when things go wrong. He is a conservative thinker, which can limit his flexibility, but possesses a strong sense of justice and a remarkable tolerance for physical pain. While he relies heavily on deductive assistance, he tends to view Conan Edogawa and the Detective Boys as a nuisance, though he has come to rely on Shinichi Kudo as a great help in solving his most challenging cases. His relationship with Kogoro is notably strained; he holds little regard for his former colleague's abilities and has come to believe that Kogoro himself is jinxed, as a murder case inevitably seems to occur wherever he goes.

Throughout the story, Megure's primary role is to lead the official police investigation, providing the procedural framework and authority that backs the deductive work of Conan and others. He serves as a stable and reassuring figure, ensuring that justice is formally served by securing evidence and making the final arrests. Over time, there are subtle hints that he may be growing aware that something unusual is behind Kogoro's miraculous, unconscious deductions, but his character remains largely consistent as the steadfast, traditional face of the law. He is known to have difficulty with modern technology and has a notable lack of skill with computers and the English language. Despite these limitations, his decades of experience, unyielding integrity, and command presence make him an indispensable pillar of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police.
