Description
Inspector Juzo Megure is a veteran police officer holding the rank of Inspector (keibu) in Division 1 of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's Criminal Investigation Section. A large-built man with a thick mustache, he is almost never seen without his characteristic hat, which he wears to cover a prominent scar on his head. This injury occurred early in his police career during a case involving a serial hit-and-run, where he was assigned to protect a woman named Midori who insisted on acting as a decoy. When a car drove at her, Megure pushed her out of the way, saving her life but sustaining the scar himself. Midori survived and later became his wife, but the scar serves as a permanent reminder of the incident, and he remains self-conscious about the circumstances of their marriage.
Megure is a capable and seasoned officer who has spent many years in law enforcement. He was once a direct superior to private detective Kogoro Mouri when the two worked together in the same district, and he maintains a professional friendship with the famous mystery novelist Yusaku Kudo, frequently consulting him on difficult cases in the past. On such occasions, Yusaku would often bring his young son Shinichi, allowing the boy to watch and learn, which contributed to Shinichi’s development into a great detective in his own right. As a figure of authority, Megure is the commanding officer who typically leads investigations at crime scenes, supervising a team of younger detectives including Wataru Takagi, Miwako Sato, Ninzaburo Shiratori, and Kazunobu Chiba.
In terms of personality, Megure is a dedicated and caring superior who looks after his subordinates, but he can also be prone to shouting fits when frustrated or when things do not go according to plan. He has little patience for foolishness and tends to be somewhat conservative in his thinking, which can limit his ability to think flexibly outside of standard police procedures. He possesses a strong sense of justice and a notable tolerance for pain, having withstood serious injuries like being struck with an iron club or stabbed without losing his composure. He typically maintains a calm, unflappable demeanor when suspects become agitated, showing little reaction to their outbursts. He is, however, not particularly skilled with modern technology, has difficulty using computers, and struggles with the English language. In some anime-original episodes, he displays a habit of lecturing culprits on morality, a trait not commonly seen in the manga version of the character.
Regarding his role in the series and key relationships, Megure respects the deductive abilities of Shinichi Kudo and frequently laments that cases would be easier if Kudo were present. He has consulted Shinichi since the young detective solved his first major case, though as a police officer, he is often cautious about involving civilians. In stark contrast, he has little regard for Kogoro Mouri, believing that the former officer is either under a jinx or simply attracts death, as murders invariably seem to occur wherever Kogoro goes. This perception is a running theme, though in later cases he appears to realize that the actual source of the deductions is the child Conan Edogawa. Generally, Megure views Conan and the Detective Boys as nuisances who interfere with crime scenes, but he tolerates them and has come to rely on Conan's hints and phone calls from the absent Shinichi to help solve cases.
As for development and notable abilities, Megure has been a consistent presence throughout the series, appearing in almost every case and all theatrical films as the lead investigator on the scene. While he is a competent and experienced administrator who handles the logistics of investigations efficiently, his deductive reasoning is not as sharp as that of series protagonists like Shinichi Kudo or Heiji Hattori. He often serves as a representative of standard police work, providing a contrast to the unconventional genius of the young detectives around him. Despite his conservative methods, he is a stable, reliable figure whose primary goal is to see justice served, and he trusts the insight of those who have proven themselves capable, even if they happen to be a young boy named Conan Edogawa.
