TV-Series
Description
Little John is the leader of a group of bandits who have taken refuge in Sherwood Forest to escape forced labor imposed by the corrupt Baron Alwyn. He is introduced early in the series when Robin, his cousins, and other young refugees encounter his gang. Initially, Little John refers to himself as Big John, a boastful nickname that underscores his physical size and pride. The first meeting between the two groups is tense, as the bandits are wary of outsiders, but the shared circumstances of oppression soon lead to an uneasy alliance.
In personality, Little John is temperamental and not always a reliable partner. He acts on instinct and can be quick to anger, often prioritizing immediate local concerns over larger strategic matters. This streak of impulsiveness sometimes puts him at odds with Robin’s more measured approach to justice. However, beneath his rough exterior he possesses a loyal heart and a strong sense of fairness, especially when it comes to protecting those who cannot defend themselves. He is fiercely protective of his own group and, later, of Robin’s cause.
His motivations are rooted in survival and a desire to live free from tyranny. He joined the forest out of necessity, but gradually his goals align with Robin’s mission to resist Baron Alwyn and other oppressors. While he may grumble or question plans, he never abandons the group in critical moments.
Key relationships include his growing bond with Robin, whom he initially treats as a rival but eventually respects as a leader. He also has a romantic interest in Winifred, Robin’s cousin, which adds a personal stake to his involvement. Within the bandit group, he commands authority, and his lieutenant Much often serves as his right-hand man.
Over the course of the series, Little John shows noticeable development. He learns to trust Robin’s judgment and becomes a more dependable ally, setting aside his earlier reluctance to cooperate. His arc involves moving from isolation and self-preservation toward camaraderie and shared purpose.
Notable abilities include his great physical strength and endurance, making him formidable in hand-to-hand combat. He favors a thick branch or a quarterstaff as his weapon, relying on powerful blows rather than finesse. His knowledge of the forest and survival skills also prove valuable to the group. Despite his gruff demeanor, he occasionally reveals a softer side, particularly in his interactions with Winifred and in moments when he protects the younger members of the company.
