Description
Dr. Tofu Ono is the local chiropractor in the Nerima district, serving as a trusted doctor for the Tendo family and various other martial artists in the community. He appears to be in his mid to late twenties with black hair and brown eyes. Known for his gentle and helpful nature, Doctor Tofu is frequently called upon to treat the bumps, bruises, and dislocated joints that result from the intense martial arts battles and training sessions involving Ranma, Akane, and their associates.
Beyond his medical practice, Doctor Tofu possesses an impressive and unconventional depth of knowledge concerning esoteric martial arts lore. He is rarely seen engaging in combat, but he is a highly accomplished martial artist in his own right. His expertise lies not in direct fighting but in an advanced command of pressure points and chiropractic techniques. These abilities allow him to produce effects ranging from near-instantaneous healing of injuries to the delayed paralysis of a limb, and he has proven capable of sneaking up on skilled fighters like Ranma without being detected. This knowledge proves crucial to the main characters on several occasions, as he helps Ranma discover cures for difficult techniques such as Happosai's moxibustion and Cologne's full body cat's tongue technique.
However, Doctor Tofu is best known for one overwhelming personality trait: his intense, lifelong love for Kasumi Tendo, the eldest daughter of the Tendo family. The mere mention of her name or her presence in the room causes a dramatic transformation in the otherwise composed doctor. His glasses fog up, he becomes incredibly nervous, and he descends into a state of babbling confusion. This infatuation is so powerful that it completely overrides his professional competence; while distracted by Kasumi, he has been known to accidentally injure his own patients, twisting their spines or limbs in ways that require further treatment to correct. The doctor carries this compulsion to a quirky extreme, often seen treating his office skeleton, which he has named Betty, as if it were a real person.
Prior to the arrival of Ranma Saotome, Akane Tendo harbored a crush on the young doctor, and he would often offer her advice and support. In the present narrative, his primary function is twofold: he acts as a recurring source of comic relief through his panicked reactions to Kasumi, and he serves as an occasional but invaluable resource for his medical and martial arts expertise. His character sees little developmental change, remaining a static figure defined by his unrequited love and his medical skill. He has also employed various characters from the main cast, including Genma Saotome and Shampoo, as assistants in his clinic at different times.
