Description
Dr. Z, originally Dr. Sonoida, serves as the primary antagonist in the series' first season. He commands the Alpha Gang from the artificial island base Zeta Point. His Japanese name cleverly reverses the word "Dinosaur," while his English name opposes the Alpha Gang's "first letter" theme by embodying the alphabet's last letter.
Personality-wise, Dr. Z is eccentric, egotistical, and short-tempered. He obsesses over becoming the "Dinosaur King," displaying stubbornness and rarely considering opposing viewpoints unless they flatter him. He frequently claims others' ideas as his own and avoids responsibility for his actions, initially refusing to apologize for his role in Rex's parents' disappearance. He demonstrates stinginess and possessiveness, declaring ownership of anything he covets. Despite his authoritative demeanor, he shows fear toward his robotic maid Helga, whom he built from a kit but cannot repair or control during malfunctions. A hidden vein of kindness traces back to his adoption of the Alpha Trio (Ursula, Zander, Ed) and Rod and Laura's father from an orphanage, raising them despite lacking a spouse. His mutiny against Dr. Ancient and Dr. Cretacia—ejecting them mid-flight to prevent his removal—caused the timeship Backlander to crash in the present day. This event scattered dinosaur cards globally and stranded infant Rex and the assistant Jonathan twelve years earlier.
