Description
Keiichi Morisato is a central figure in the narrative, originally introduced as a twenty-one-year-old student at the Nekomi Institute of Technology. He is a dedicated member of the university's Motor Club, an affiliation that speaks to his lifelong passion for mechanics and vehicles. His family background reveals roots in the Kushiro subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. His father, Keima, is a glassblower with a natural talent for motorcycle maintenance, while his mother, Takano, is an avid mah-jong player. He also has a younger sister named Megumi.
In terms of personality, Keiichi is fundamentally defined by his genuine kindness and good nature. He consistently tries to treat everyone with respect, dislikes seeing others suffer, and is reluctant to cause harm. This pure-heartedness extends to a notable level of innocence, particularly regarding romantic relationships, as he initially has very little experience with women. While he can sometimes be gullible, he is far from unintelligent; he is quite clever and capable of analytical thought, speaking out firmly when a situation demands it. A significant aspect of his character is his difficulty in expressing his deepest emotions, especially his love for Belldandy, which often leads to a shy and indecisive demeanor in matters of the heart. However, despite this hesitation, he proves to be exceptionally reliable and devoted when his loved ones are in need. His sense of fun is also a driving force in his life, most often expressed through his enthusiasm for creating and racing unusual motor vehicles.
Keiichi's primary motivation stems from the accidental wish that set the story in motion. After mistakenly dialing the Goddess Relief Office, he jokingly wished for the goddess Belldandy to stay by his side forever, a wish that was unexpectedly granted. From that point forward, his driving force becomes his deep and abiding love for Belldandy, coupled with a desire to protect their unique bond. Although he struggles to voice his feelings, his actions are consistently guided by a need to be worthy of her presence and to navigate the extraordinary circumstances her divine nature brings into his otherwise ordinary life.
His role in the story is primarily that of the mortal anchor in a world increasingly filled with divine and supernatural events. As Belldandy's contracted partner, he is the lens through which the audience experiences the collision of the mundane and the magical. He often serves as the "everyman" caught in the middle of chaotic situations caused by visiting gods, goddesses, demons, and his own eccentric college club seniors. Despite lacking divine powers, he frequently acts as the emotional core and a voice of reason, using his wits and mechanical expertise to resolve problems.
Key relationships define his journey. His bond with Belldandy is the heart of the narrative, a pure and steadfast romance that faces numerous trials. He lives with Belldandy and her two sisters, Urd and Skuld, forming a unique family unit. With the older sister Urd, he often endures her teasing and magical mishaps, while with the younger Skuld, he shares a sibling-like dynamic where he is frequently the target of her jealousy and inventions, yet also a protective figure. Outside of the temple, his relationships with his demanding seniors Tamiya and Otaki, as well as his employer Chihiro Fujimi at the Whirlwind repair shop, ground him in the human world of motor clubs and vehicle maintenance.
Throughout the series, Keiichi undergoes significant development. While he begins as a somewhat typical, unlucky college student, his experiences with Belldandy gradually make him more confident and capable. He grows from a shy individual into a more reliable young man who can face supernatural threats with remarkable composure. A major revelation in the later manga explains that his extreme chastity and inability to lust were not entirely natural but were the result of a powerful seal placed by Heaven to maintain the separation between gods and mortals. This seal was eventually broken through a sincere expression of love, freeing him to experience his full range of emotions. His life progresses from student life to working as a mechanic, showing his steady transition into adulthood.
Despite being a normal human, Keiichi possesses several notable abilities. He is an exceptionally skilled mechanic and an outstanding race car driver, talents that are highly respected within his social circle. His proficiency is such that he can design and build vehicles, earning him a position of authority within the Motor Club. In a unique twist, Keiichi's pure heart and the love he receives from the goddesses allow him to temporarily host angels, which are extensions of a goddess's power. He successfully hosts Lind's angel, Cool Mint, and later the hybrid creature Blue Lance, a feat virtually unheard of for a mortal. He also enjoys playing the acoustic guitar and has a fondness for Western popular music.
