Description
Char Aznable is a central figure in the Universal Century timeline of Gundam, a character whose identity shifts dramatically across the original One Year War, the Gryps Conflict, and the Second Neo Zeon movement. Born as Casval Rem Deikun, he is the son of Zeon Zum Deikun, the founder of the Republic of Zeon on the space colony Side 3. After his father's sudden death, which Casval believes was orchestrated by the Zabi family who usurped power, he and his sister Artesia were forced into hiding. To survive and enact his revenge, Casval assumed the identity of his look-alike, Char Aznable, a name he would make legendary.

Throughout his life, Char operates under several aliases, most notably Quattro Bajeena, a persona he uses while infiltrating the Earth Federation forces. He is most famously known by his fears callsign, "The Red Comet," earned for his incredible speed and prowess in battle, specifically for single-handedly destroying five Federation battleships during the Battle of Loum while piloting a custom red Zaku II.

Char's personality is a complex blend of charisma and calculation. He is a natural leader, capable of inspiring intense loyalty and persuading others to follow his grand vision for humanity's future. On the surface, he is cool, composed, and often theatrical, but this masks a deep-seated loneliness and a ruthless willingness to manipulate or sacrifice anyone, even allies, to achieve his goals. While he sincerely advocates for the independence of Spacenoids, his actions are often driven by personal grudges and a desire for vengeance, particularly against the Zabi family.

Char's motivations evolve over time. Initially, his primary driving force is revenge against the Zabi family for the assassination of his father. He masterfully manipulates events during the One Year War to bring about the downfall of Garma Zabi and later personally kills Kycilia Zabi. Over the years, this personal vendetta broadens into a messianic ideology. He becomes convinced that humanity must abandon Earth, which he sees as a corrupting gravitational force, and fully migrate to space to evolve into Newtypes, a more advanced species of humanity. This belief ultimately leads him to a radical plan to force this evolution by making Earth uninhabitable.

In the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Char serves as the primary antagonist, a charismatic ace pilot for the Principality of Zeon who becomes the arch-rival of the young Federation pilot, Amuro Ray. Their rivalry is intense and deeply personal, forged in battle and tragedy. A pivotal moment is the death of Lalah Sune, a powerful Newtype girl whom Char had taken under his wing. When Lalah is killed protecting Char from Amuro, it creates a psychic scar and a bitter, mutual hatred between the two rivals that defines both their lives.

In Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Char undergoes a significant transformation, taking on the alias Quattro Bajeena. In this chapter, he becomes a mentor figure to the new protagonist, Kamille Bidan, and a leading member of the Anti-Earth Union Group, fighting against the oppressive Titans. This period sees him fighting alongside his former enemies, including Amuro Ray and Bright Noa, as he temporarily abandons his leadership role and struggles with the weight of his own decisions.

Char returns in his final appearance as the main antagonist of Char's Counterattack. Now the undisputed leader of Neo Zeon, he has fully embraced his radical ideology and attempts to drop the asteroid Axis onto Earth to trigger a nuclear winter and force humanity into space. His key relationships are central to his story. His rivalry with Amuro Ray is the emotional core of the saga, a clash between two Newtypes who, despite being enemies, possess a profound psychic understanding of each other. He shares a complicated bond with his sister, Sayla Mass, whom he protects from afar. His relationship with Lalah Sune is also critical; he later confesses that she could have been a mother to him, revealing his profound loneliness. His other significant relationships include his feigned friendship with Garma Zabi, whose death he engineers, and his mentoring of Kamille Bidan during his days as Quattro.

Char's development across the series is a tragic arc from a young, calculating avenger to a weary and ultimately radicalized leader. He shows a fear of taking on the role of a decision-maker during the Gryps Conflict, but by the time of Char's Counterattack, he has fully committed to his own terrible solution for humanity's future, having lost faith in political compromise.

Notable abilities include his exceptional skill as a mobile suit pilot, which is legendary even among Zeon's elite. He is also a Newtype, possessing heightened spatial awareness, empathy, and limited psychic abilities that give him a significant advantage in combat. Beyond piloting, Char is a highly capable soldier, skilled in hand-to-hand combat and marksmanship. Furthermore, he is an outstanding strategist and a charismatic orator, capable of swaying public opinion and commanding the loyalty of large forces.
