Description
Katz Hawin, later known as Katz Kobayashi after being adopted, is a character who appears in the original Mobile Suit Gundam and its sequel, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. His journey follows a tragic arc from a resourceful child survivor of war to a reckless young man whose ambitions far outpace his abilities.

Originally named Katz Hawin, he was one of three children orphaned during the Zeon attack on Side 7 at the outset of the One Year War. Along with his fellow orphans Letz and Kikka, he was taken aboard the Earth Federation warship White Base. Despite his young age, Katz proved to be more than just a helpless child; he was involved in several key incidents, most notably helping to defuse bombs planted during Char Aznable's infiltration of the Federation headquarters at Jaburo. Following the war's end, Katz, Letz, and Kikka were adopted by former White Base crew members Hayato Kobayashi and Fraw Bow.

In the years between the One Year War and the Gryps Conflict, Katz developed a powerful and idealized admiration for the White Base's legendary pilot, Amuro Ray. He spent time helping at his adoptive father's mobile suit museum, where he learned the basics of piloting by operating captured Zeon suits from the previous war. This experience, however, fostered a dangerous overconfidence in his own skills. By the time he is a teenager, Katz is impulsive, reckless, and stubbornly convinced of his own readiness for combat, a belief not shared by those who care for him.

Driven by a desire to live up to the heroic legacy he idolizes, Katz is determined to become a soldier. He actively seeks out conflict, first joining the anti-Titans resistance group Karaba on Earth. He helps Amuro escape from Federation surveillance and later commandeers a Gundam Mk-II during a battle, only to crash it into the sea. Despite his recklessness, he is eventually allowed to travel into space to fight alongside the Anti-Earth Union Group. He continues to act on his own initiative, often disobeying orders and stealing mobile suits in an attempt to prove himself. This behavior frequently gets him into trouble and makes him a source of frustration for his more experienced comrades, including Kamille Bidan and his own foster father, Hayato.

One of Katz's most significant and destructive relationships is with Sarah Zabiarov, a young officer from the Titans who defects to the AEUG. Katz becomes infatuated with her, and his judgment is so clouded by his feelings that he is easily manipulated. He falls for her false information about a colony drop and later helps her escape back to the Titans, an act for which he is imprisoned by his own side. His obsession with Sarah persists, leading him to neglect his duties and make irrational decisions on the battlefield.

Throughout the Gryps Conflict, Katz pilots several machines, including the MSA-003 Nemo and the FXA-05D G-Defenser, a support fighter that can combine with the Gundam Mk-II to form the Super Gundam. While he does demonstrate moments of competence and even saves Kamille's life on occasion, these acts are often overshadowed by his immaturity and tactical errors. He has been identified as possessing some degree of Newtype ability, having shown glimmers of it as a child, but his skills are nowhere near the level of natural talents like Amuro or Kamille. His spatial awareness, in particular, is notably poor, a fatal flaw when combined with his arrogance.

Katz's story comes to an end during the final battles of the conflict. Consumed by rage after Sarah is killed protecting her leader, Paptimus Scirocco, Katz blames the Neo Zeon leader Haman Karn and charges recklessly into battle. In his final sortie, while piloting the G-Defenser in support of Emma Sheen, he becomes fixated on taunting the skilled enemy pilot Yazan Gable. While trying to show off, he fails to pay attention to his surroundings and crashes directly into a floating meteorite, losing consciousness. He is then easily finished off by Yazan's attack. His body is found floating in space, a grim end for a young man who dreamed of being a hero. In death, his spirit, along with others, appears to guide and protect the protagonist Kamille Bidan in the final confrontation.
