OVA
Description
Mikhail Diaghilev is a supporting character in the anime Plastic Little. He serves as the chief engineer of the Cha-Cha Maru, the ship captained by Tita Mu Koshigaya. He is a middle-aged man with white hair and yellow eyes, and he has been a member of the crew longer than most others, having served under Tita's father when the previous captain owned the vessel. His tenure as chief engineer traces directly back to that earlier period.

Mikhail is one of the most loyal members of the Cha-Cha Maru's crew. His loyalty is rooted in a deep sense of guilt over the death of Tita's father. Eleven years before the events of the story, the engine section of the ship was jettisoned to save the vessel, and Tita's father was in that section. Mikhail has always believed that he himself should have been the one to die instead. This guilt drives him to protect Tita at all costs. He is willing to sacrifice his own life if it would save the ship or give his captain an advantage against her enemies. His devotion is absolute, and he treats his role as engineer with extreme seriousness.

Mikhail's personality is gruff and no-nonsense, often acting as a stern but caring grandfather figure within the ship's family-like crew dynamic. Alongside Balboa, who serves as a father figure, and Mei, who acts as a mother figure, Mikhail rounds out the older generation of the crew, providing guidance and steadfast support to the younger members, particularly Tita. He is a man of few words but strong actions, embodying the principle that duty and loyalty come before personal safety.

In terms of abilities, Mikhail is a highly skilled engineer responsible for maintaining and operating the Cha-Cha Maru's systems. His technical expertise is critical to the ship's performance during the dangerous cloud-sea hunts and combat situations. His character does not undergo dramatic development over the course of the single-episode OVA, but his underlying motivation—the need to atone for the past and protect Tita's life—remains a constant and driving force behind his actions.
