Description
Keitaro Urashima is the central protagonist of his story, a young man whose defining characteristic is his unwavering determination in the face of perpetual misfortune. At the start of his journey, he is a twenty-year-old ronin, a student who has failed his university entrance examinations on two separate occasions. His singular, almost desperate goal is to gain admission to the prestigious Tokyo University, not for prestige or career prospects, but to fulfill a childhood promise made fifteen years earlier. As a young boy playing near the Hinata Inn, he promised a girl whose face and name he can no longer clearly remember that they would both enter Tokyo University together to live happily ever after. This hazy yet powerful memory is the engine that drives all of his efforts.
After his parents, frustrated by his lack of progress, encourage him to leave home, Keitaro seeks refuge at his grandmother's inn, the Hinata Inn. Unbeknownst to him, the property has been converted into an all-female dormitory. Upon his arrival, a series of comical and unfortunate accidents lead the residents to brand him as a pervert. However, through the intervention of his cousin, Haruka Urashima, he is allowed to stay, not as a guest, but as the new manager and, in some versions, the owner of the establishment. This role places him in the center of a chaotic household of five very different young women who are initially hostile to his presence.
Keitaro's personality is a study in contradictions. He is exceptionally kind-hearted, well-meaning, and always willing to help a friend in trouble, as demonstrated by his patient tutoring of the youngest resident, Shinobu. He is also incredibly persistent, refusing to abandon his dream of Tokyo University despite repeated failures and ridicule. However, he is equally defined by his profound bad luck, extreme clumsiness, and a timidity that borders on the pathological, especially when it comes to expressing his romantic feelings. This combination of traits leads to a constant stream of misunderstandings where he accidentally walks in on the girls in the bath or finds himself in compromising positions, for which he is regularly and violently punished. The girls, particularly Naru Narusegawa, respond with powerful punches, kicks, and sword strikes that would fell a normal person, yet Keitaro possesses a near-superhuman resilience. He endures falls from great heights, being struck by vehicles, and even the explosion of a rocket with little more than a bruise, leading the other characters to jokingly call him "Keitaro the immortal".
His relationships with the residents form the heart of the story, with his connection to Naru being the most central. Naru is a brilliant, sharp-tempered honor student who is also the first girl he met at the inn. Despite their volatile relationship marked by her violent outbursts and his accidental offenses, a deep bond forms between them. He comes to believe she is the girl from his promise, a theory that is both reinforced and complicated by the arrival of other figures from his past. The gentle and clumsy Mutsumi Otohime shares a similar promise and history, creating a romantic triangle that forces Keitaro to confront his true feelings. Other residents like the sword-wielding Motoko Aoyama, who despises his weakness but gradually develops affection for him, also play significant roles in his life.
Keitaro's development throughout the story is significant. He transforms from a self-described loser with low self-esteem into a confident young man who takes charge of his life. Under the mentorship of the archaeologist Noriyasu Seta, he discovers a true calling for archaeology, a path that provides him with a sense of purpose beyond the childhood promise. He hones his physical abilities, becoming a skilled martial artist capable of holding his own in a fight. This personal growth makes him more attractive to the women around him. Ultimately, his perseverance pays off; on his third or fourth attempt, he finally passes the Tokyo University entrance exam. He proposes to Naru, who was the girl from his promise all along, and the series concludes with their marriage and his successful career as an archaeologist, having finally achieved the destiny he spent so long struggling towards.
