Description
Lord Yupa, also known as Yupa Miralda or Master Yupa, is a central figure in Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. He is a renowned explorer and widely considered the finest swordsman in the Periphery. Despite his formidable combat skills, he is a man of peace who avoids unnecessary violence and values patience as a warrior's greatest weapon. His full name is Yupa Miralda and he is 45 years old.

Yupa has spent many years traveling the world accompanied by his two horseclaws, Kai and Kui. His primary motivations are to solve the mysteries of the Toxic Jungle, also known as the Sea of Corruption, and to search for the fabled Blue Clad One, a prophetic figure destined to restore the bond between humanity and the earth. He believes that understanding the world is the key to humanity's survival. His extensive journeys have given him deep knowledge of different cultures, politics, history, and natural science.

In the story, Yupa serves as a mentor and father figure to Nausicaä, the princess of the Valley of the Wind. He is a longtime friend of her father, King Jihl, and is highly respected by the people of the Valley, often serving as a godfather to children. At the beginning of the tale, he returns to the Valley and immediately recognizes Nausicaä's unique potential, particularly her ability to communicate with the giant insect-like Ohmu and her fearlessness in the Toxic Jungle. He acts as her guide and protector, offering wisdom while allowing her to forge her own path. He also acts as a mediator in the escalating conflicts between the Valley of the Wind, the Tolmekian Empire, and the Dorok forces, seeking to prevent unnecessary bloodshed.

Key relationships include his deep bond with Nausicaä, whom he sees as both a student and a possible savior. He is a trusted advisor to King Jihl and later works alongside Asbel of Pejite and the Dorok girl Ketcha in the manga. He maintains a wary but respectful interaction with Princess Kushana of Tolmekia. He also shows great respect for the Ohmu and their role in the natural order, unlike most humans.

Yupa's character development is marked by his unwavering commitment to knowledge and peace. He uncovers the truth that the Toxic Jungle is not a source of corruption but a natural system that purifies the polluted soil and water left by ancient civilization. This discovery reinforces his hope for the future. In the manga, his story takes a tragic turn: during the final days of the war, he loses his left arm from a grenade thrown by a vengeful Dorok woman, and shortly afterward he sacrifices his own life to protect Kushana from a Dorok warrior. His death becomes a powerful moment of selflessness that deeply affects those who knew him, especially Nausicaä.

Notable abilities include his unmatched swordsmanship, which allows him to defeat multiple opponents with ease. He is also a skilled scholar and observer, capable of reading the environment and understanding complex ecological and historical truths. His physical appearance is distinctive: tall and rugged, with a large cloak, a wide-brimmed hat with a feather, a scarf, and a mask that protects him from the jungle's miasma. Under his hat, his hairstyle is a mohawk. His demeanor is calm, honorable, and patient, and he is known for his piercing gaze that reflects his wisdom and resolve.
