Description
Hisui is a central character and one of the heroines of the visual novel Tsukihime, where she serves as a maid at the Tohno mansion. Her background is deeply tied to the Tohno family. She is an orphan, originally a member of a branch family of the Fujou clan, who was brought to the mansion along with her older twin sister, Kohaku. The sisters possess a rare and specific ability known as being Sympaths or Synchronizers, which allows them to transfer their own physical and mental energy to another person. This ability was exploited by the head of the family, Makihisa Tohno, to suppress his demonic blood. Because of Kohaku's pleas and sacrifice, Hisui was spared from this fate and instead spent her childhood playing freely outside with Shiki and Akiha Tohno, forming a bond with Shiki during his early years at the mansion.
Hisui's personality is defined by a stark contrast between her outward demeanor and her inner self. On the surface, she is a sever and inflexible servant, sporting an apathetic expression and speaking in a formal, almost mechanical manner. This quiet and unyielding nature leads Shiki to perceive her as robotic, yet a careful observer notes that she displays a wide variety of subtle expressions, making her feel more human than her perpetually smiling sister, Kohaku. This stoic facade is a self-imposed penance. After witnessing the abuse Kohaku suffered, Hisui became deeply depressed. In response, Kohaku adopted a cheerful persona, and the two sisters gradually traded their roles. Hisui suppresses her naturally kind and emotional personality to allow Kohaku to maintain this new, seemingly happy identity. She also forbade herself from leaving the mansion of her own accord for a long time, though instances like bringing Shiki his lunch in Kagetsu Tohya show her slowly overcoming this.
Her primary motivation is the protection of her sister. She carries the burden of knowing Kohaku's traumatic past and her secret plans for the downfall of the Tohno family. Hisui willingly plays the part of the emotionless doll so that Kohaku can live a different life, and she refuses to let any man touch her as a result of what happened, with the sole exception being Shiki. Within the story, her role begins as that of a diligent if unapproachable maid, responsible for waking Shiki, preparing his uniform, and maintaining the mansion. Her personal route is one of the key narratives in Tsukihime, where the mystery of her past and her relationship with Shiki are explored. Her dynamic with Shiki is built on childhood memories he misremembers, confusing her with Kohaku. As the story progresses, the facade breaks down, revealing her true, caring nature as she offers Shiki her support and her Synchronization ability to help him in battle.
Hisui's most significant relationship is with her sister, Kohaku. They are inextricably linked by their shared trauma and their role reversal. Hisui is also deeply connected to Shiki, whose presence is the catalyst for much of her emotional development. Her development throughout the narrative sees her slowly discard her rigidly guarded exterior. By the end of her dedicated route, she is able to express her genuine feelings more freely and return to something closer to the cheerful girl she was in her childhood, while also forging a new life with Shiki.
In terms of abilities, Hisui's primary power is as a Sympath, which allows her to transfer her life force and strengthen the mental and physical condition of a target through a ritual often involving the exchange of bodily fluids. She is also highly proficient in all manner of household chores and cleaning, a skill honed by years of service. However, this skill has an infamous gap: Hisui has a disastrous sense of taste and is completely incapable of cooking, to the point where any dish she prepares is potentially lethal. She refrains from cooking for Shiki specifically to avoid causing him harm. In fighting games like Melty Blood, where she is a playable character, she demonstrates unconventional combat abilities, including a strange martial arts technique known as the Dark Jade Fist, which originated from a side story where she was possessed by an evil spirit. She creatively wields household items like brooms, chairs, and cooking utensils as weapons.
