Description
Nrvnqsr Chaos, often referred to as Nero Chaos, is a central antagonist in the anime Lunar Legend Tsukihime. He is ranked as the tenth of the Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors, making him one of the most powerful vampires to appear in the story.
Chaos was originally a human alchemist named Fabro Rowan, hailing from the Sea of Estray, a cluster of smaller sorcerer organizations in northern Europe. His pursuit of immortality led him to develop a method to absorb and merge his own existence with the lives of other creatures. Over the course of more than a millennium, this process transformed him into a living mass of chaotic matter, a primordial soup of accumulated lives. His body now contains the essence of 666 beasts, ranging from ordinary animals like wolves and deer to mythological creatures such as unicorns. The Holy Church gave him the name Nero Chaos as a play on words in Gematria, where the letters of his name sum to 666, the so-called Number of the Beast.
In terms of personality, Chaos is characterized by a scholarly, contemplative demeanor, but he grows extremely agitated when confronted with situations he cannot understand. His long existence and unique nature have made him increasingly apathetic and indifferent toward everything around him. He is conscious that his individual mind is fading as he becomes more unified with the beasts, yet his ultimate motivation is to come to understand the chaos that formed him. Unlike typical vampires, he does not require blood to sustain himself; he functions more as a simple assassin.
In the story, Chaos is the first Dead Apostle that protagonist Shiki Tohno encounters alongside Arcueid Brunestud. He is responsible for a mass slaughter at the Hotel Century, where Shiki and Arcueid are hiding while waiting for him. This act is part of his larger role as a pursuer of Arcueid. While he is involved in the vampire murders plaguing the city, he is not the sole perpetrator; the main culprit is Roa. Chaos serves as an early, formidable obstacle that forces Shiki to confront the true nature of vampires and his own abilities.
Key relationships in the anime are primarily adversarial. He is a direct enemy of Arcueid Brunestud and Shiki Tohno. His role also connects him to the broader hierarchy of the Dead Apostle Ancestors, though his interactions with other characters are limited largely to conflict.
Chaos possesses extraordinary abilities centered on his body being a small-scale Reality Marble called the Nest of the Beast King. Within him swirl the factors of 666 beasts, which he can summon at will to do his bidding. These beasts devour victims completely, consuming blood, meat, and bones. Because he effectively has 666 lives, he is impervious to conventional physical or magical damage; killing him requires destroying each individual beast factor. This makes him a monster that even a serious Arcueid would struggle to kill. To prevent his existence from collapsing into perfect chaos, he must periodically supply his body with human bodies to satiate the beasts and prolong his form.
Throughout the anime, Chaos shows little development, as he is an antagonist who remains largely static. His role is to provide a tangible, immediate threat that advances the plot and tests the main characters. The lingering nature of his chaos is such that even after his death, remnants of his being can persist and eventually gain a will of their own, as seen in certain story routes where part of the Chaos is used to heal Shiki and later reforms around a host. This underscores the enduring and uncontrollable nature of the entity he became.
