Description
Arcueid Brunestud is a character originating from the visual novel Tsukihime, where she serves as one of the primary heroines. She is a True Ancestor, a pure and ancient form of vampire, and is known as the White Princess of the True Ancestors, holding a royal status among their kind. Her title of Brunestud is granted to those capable of manifesting the ancestral home, the Millennium Castle Brunestud. Her physical appearance is that of a young woman with long, blonde hair and red eyes, standing 167 centimeters tall.
Arcueid was born in the 12th century, created specifically to serve as a living weapon for her race. Her purpose was to act as an executioner, hunting and destroying those True Ancestors who had fallen to their vampiric impulses and become demon lords, as well as powerful Dead Apostles. For centuries, she carried out this task with cold efficiency, awakening from slumber only to destroy her targets before returning to sleep, with her accumulated memories erased each time. She was treated as nothing more than a tool and was taught only what was necessary for her missions, remaining ignorant of the world and even of her own nature as a vampire.
Her existence was upended by the alchemist and priest Michael Roa Valdamjong, who sought immortality. Roa tricked Arcueid into drinking his blood, an act that unleashed a uncontrollable frenzy within her. In this berserk state, she slaughtered most of the remaining True Ancestors before regaining her sanity long enough to chain herself within the Millennium Castle to prevent further catastrophe. This event also caused a portion of her power to be stolen by Roa. After finally destroying Roa's original body with the help of the Church's Burial Agency, she learned he had mastered reincarnation. Since then, she has awoken each time Roa reincarnates into a new host to hunt him down, a cycle she has repeated seventeen times by the story's start.
Despite her true age of over 800 years, Arcueid possesses a personality that is strikingly innocent, childlike, and whimsical. Because she spent most of her existence asleep and isolated, she has very little practical knowledge of the world or its social norms. Her behavior can seem naive, curious, and even reckless, as she finds joy in simple pleasures like movies, novels, or going for walks. This carefree and optimistic demeanor, however, is partly a mask. Deep down, she is a pessimist who fears her own bloodlust and the loneliness of her existence. Her personality underwent a significant change after being killed and then revived by the protagonist, Tohno Shiki. This shocking experience caused a "malfunction" in her being, transforming her from an emotionless machine into a more vibrant, airheaded, and fun-loving individual.
Her primary motivation in the story is to eliminate Roa for good. By destroying his current reincarnation, she hopes to reclaim the power he stole from her. Her secondary, and ultimately more compelling, motivation is her burgeoning relationship with Shiki. After he kills her, she forces him to become her partner to compensate for her lost power. Through their collaboration, she begins to experience genuine companionship and romantic love for the first time, becoming deeply attached to him. This relationship is central to her character arc, as she struggles with her growing emotions and her fear of succumbing to her vampiric nature and harming him.
Key relationships define her existence. Her most significant connection is with Tohno Shiki, the young man who possessed the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception and was able to kill her. Despite this violent first encounter, she does not hold a grudge and instead becomes fascinated by him, eventually falling in love. She also has a complicated history with Altrouge Brunestud, another powerful being considered her "sister" and a fellow successor to the Crimson Moon. Altrouge bested Arcueid in a past battle and took a portion of her long hair as a trophy. Her relationship with Roa is one of pure enmity; he is the architect of her fall and the target of her endless hunt.
As a combatant, Arcueid is extraordinarily powerful. She possesses superhuman strength, speed, endurance, and regenerative abilities, allowing her to heal from most wounds almost instantly. Her most remarkable feat of regeneration is reforming her entire body after being sliced into seventeen pieces by Shiki, though this consumed the vast majority of her power. As a True Ancestor, she is immune to traditional vampiric weaknesses like sunlight, crosses, and garlic. She typically uses about seventy percent of her power to suppress her vampiric impulse to drink blood.
Her signature ability is the Marble Phantasm, a reality-manipulation power that allows her to manifest any naturally occurring phenomenon, effectively turning her imagination into reality. This ability also enables her to summon the Millennium Castle Brunestud. She possesses powerful Mystic Eyes, which change color to gold when active and allow her to exert control over others through mental interference. Furthermore, as an existence connected to the planet, she possesses the capacity to become an Ultimate One, allowing her to receive backup from the Earth itself to raise her power level above that of her opponent.
