Description
Arisu Fujisaki is a character known for her exceptional skill in constructing the robotic dolls called Angels, serving as the younger sister and technical support for the Angelic Layer competitor Madoka Fujisaki. Born on June 25th, she is ten years old and has B blood type. She is a talented genius in the field of Angel engineering, following in her sister’s footsteps as a capable Kung Fu artist which allows her to create Angels that are notably strong and agile. Despite her building prowess, Arisu does not initially create an Angel for herself, which has been interpreted as a suggestion that she does not consider herself skilled at guiding them in battle.
Arisu is deeply invested in the success of the Angels she builds and is very sensitive about their performance. This sensitivity leads her to harbor a strong desire to prove the quality of her creations, sometimes manifesting as a rivalry with other competitors, particularly the protagonist Misaki Suzuhara. Her primary motivation is to see the Angels she designs achieve victory, and she experiences significant distress when they fail. For example, she designed the Angels Mao and Unpyo to be superior to the powerful Suzuka, but when Unpyo loses to Suzuka in record time, the event mortifies both Arisu and her sister. This fixation on winning leads her down a questionable path; she creates a special transmitter to sabotage an opponent's Angel, Hikaru, during a match to ensure her sister's victory. This act of cheating is discovered by Ohjiro Mihara, who confronts her and explains that Angelic Layer is intended to showcase true talent and that anyone can be brilliant through honest means, which forces her to abandon her cheating ways.
Arisu’s role in the story is primarily that of a rival and an antagonist for a portion of the narrative before undergoing significant character development. Initially, she aids her sister in competitions, but her methods are dishonest and born from a place of insecurity and a need to validate her abilities as a builder. Her key relationship is with her older sister, Madoka Fujisaki, for whom she builds Angels. After a loss to Hikaru, Arisu becomes so upset that she accuses Madoka of not liking the Angels she made. She also harbors a romantic interest in Ohjiro Mihara and feels a sense of envy towards Misaki, both for her natural talent as a rookie player and for the attention she receives from Ohjiro.
By the end of the story, Arisu undergoes a positive transformation. She creates a new, balance-oriented Angel for herself named Alice, which is also the translation of her name. With her own Angel, she vows to face Misaki in a friendly battle. In the final episode, she is shown competing with Alice, demonstrating her growth from a cheating supporter to a direct and honest participant in Angelic Layer. Her notable abilities include her genius-level aptitude for designing and constructing Angels, her knowledge of Kung Fu which informs her combat-effective designs, and her technical skill to create devices like the transmitter used for sabotage. In the manga, her personal Angel Alice fights Hikaru and loses, an experience that helps her truly understand the meaning and spirit of playing Angelic Layer.
