Description
Boa Sandersonia is a fictional character from the manga and anime series One Piece. She is the middle sister of the three Gorgon Sisters who rule over the island of women, Amazon Lily. As the younger sister of the Pirate Empress Boa Hancock and the older sister of Boa Marigold, Sandersonia serves as one of the two secondary commanders of the Kuja Pirates.
Physically, Sandersonia is a tall and imposing woman standing over four and a half meters tall. Her most distinctive features are her large head, which is noticeably disproportionate to the rest of her body, and her long, dark green hair. She has a forked tongue that often sticks out of her mouth, and her serpentine appearance is completed by her snake-like eyes. Her typical attire consists of a revealing green and white patterned bikini top, a white cape, and green bottoms. She is often accompanied by a large black panther named Bacura. On her back, concealed by her cape and long hair, is a branding known as the Hoof of the Soaring Dragon, a mark inflicted by her former masters, the World Nobles, to denote her status as a slave.
Personality-wise, Sandersonia is the most openly emotional of the three sisters. While her eldest sister, Hancock, frequently presents a cold and haughty demeanor, Sandersonia is more prone to expressing her feelings, including deep shame and sorrow when their traumatic past is brought to light. This vulnerability can cause her to break down in tears, requiring comfort from her younger sister, Marigold. Like her siblings, she lives under the immense weight of a lie, having told the citizens of Amazon Lily that the mark on her back is a curse from a Gorgon monster that will petrify anyone who looks upon it. In combat, her personality shifts to become a playful and somewhat sadistic warrior who enjoys tormenting her opponents before attempting to crush them with her physical strength.
The motivations and actions of Sandersonia are almost entirely rooted in her traumatic backstory and her fierce loyalty to her sisters, particularly Hancock. She and her sisters were kidnapped as children and sold into slavery to the World Nobles. During this time, as a form of cruel entertainment, she was forced to eat the Snake-Snake Fruit, Model: Anaconda, a Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows her to transform into an anaconda or a hybrid snake-woman. Years later, they were liberated by the fish-man Fisher Tiger. Unable to return home on their own, they were eventually aided by the former pirate Silvers Rayleigh, Shakuyaku, and a former empress of Amazon Lily named Gloriosa. Their entire motivation for creating the Gorgon curse myth and rising to power as the island's rulers is to protect the secret of their past and prevent the shame of their slave brands from being discovered.
In the story, Sandersonia plays a significant antagonistic role during the Amazon Lily arc. When Monkey D. Luffy inadvertently sees the slave brand on Hancock's back, the Gorgon Sisters sentence him to death in the arena. Sandersonia, alongside her sister Marigold, battles Luffy. During this fight, she demonstrates her formidable abilities, including the use of Kenbunshoku Haki to predict and dodge Luffy's attacks, and Busoshoku Haki to harden her strikes. She also uses her Devil Fruit powers for attacks like the Snake Dance and can manipulate her hair, a technique reminiscent of the Life Return ability, to form powerful snake-like appendages. However, Luffy ultimately overcomes her by activating his Gear Second technique, which moves too fast for her Haki to track.
This confrontation is the catalyst for Sandersonia's character development. As she is falling into a spiked pit, her clothes burn away, threatening to expose the slave brand on her back to the entire population of Amazon Lily. To prevent this, Luffy grabs her and uses his own body to cover the mark, protecting her secret. This act of selfless kindness from a man, whom they had been taught to hate, deeply affects Sandersonia. Her hatred for Luffy transforms into gratitude and respect. From that point forward, she supports her sister's decision to aid Luffy, including the dangerous mission to infiltrate the great prison Impel Down and participate in the summit war at Marineford. Her key relationships are thus centered on her sisters, her rescuers like Rayleigh and Gloriosa, and her eventual ally, Monkey D. Luffy.
