Caroline Combrinck
Description
Caroline Combrinck is a German voice actress, born on July 20, 1983, in Munich. She comes from a family deeply rooted in the German dubbing industry; her parents, Ivar Combrinck and Inge Solbrig-Combrinck, and her brother, Butz Combrinck, are all voice actors. This family connection meant she was active in voice acting from an early age.
Combrinck is best known for being the first German voice of the iconic anime character Ash Ketchum in the Pokémon series. She originally voiced the role from the show's debut in 1999 until 2001, covering the first three seasons. She left the series to pursue acting training in the United States, at which point the role was taken over by Veronika Neugebauer. Following Neugebauer's death in 2009, Combrinck returned to the character, voicing Ash Ketchum again from the twelfth season in 2010 through the nineteenth season in 2017. After this second lengthy period, she was replaced in the twentieth season due to creative differences. Her portrayal of Ash Ketchum spanned numerous Pokémon films in addition to the TV series, including features like Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life, Pokémon Zoroark: Master of Illusions, and Pokémon the Movie: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages.
Beyond her signature role in Pokémon, Combrinck has an extensive body of work in anime dubbing. A prominent recent role is Minako Aino / Sailor Venus in the German versions of the Sailor Moon Crystal series and the film Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal. For Sailor Moon Crystal, she was also responsible for the dialogue direction. Her other anime voice roles include Boa Sandersonia in One Piece, Nelly Raimon and Timmy Sanders in Inazuma Eleven, Hiroko Asahina in RahXephon, and the young Yūichirō Hyakuya in Seraph of the End. She also voiced the character Smash in the German anime-parody web series Fast Heroes Sixty.
Her work is not limited to Japanese animation. Combrinck is also known for her contributions to numerous American animated and live-action series. She provided various voices for the German dubs of long-running shows like The Simpsons and Futurama. In the realm of live-action series, her voice can be heard in popular shows such as Game of Thrones, where she dubbed the character Osha, and The 100, for which she was the German voice of Raven Reyes. She also dubbed characters in series like Arrow and Once Upon a Time in Wonderland.
Throughout her career, Caroline Combrinck has established herself as a versatile and prominent figure in German voice acting. Her two distinct periods voicing the beloved protagonist Ash Ketchum have made her voice a defining element of the Pokémon franchise for a generation of German viewers, while her continued work across a wide range of anime and western productions demonstrates her lasting presence in the industry.
