Movie
Description
Ash Ketchum is a young Pokémon trainer from Pallet Town who serves as the main human protagonist in this film. In Pokémon the Movie: Genesect and the Legend Awakened, he is continuing his journey through the Unova region accompanied by his two close friends, Iris and Cilan, and his first and most trusted partner, Pikachu.
Ash's personality is defined by a strong and determined spirit, combined with a deep sense of kindness and courage. He is naturally energetic and good-natured, often approaching both people and Pokémon with an open and friendly demeanor. While he can sometimes be seen as childish or clumsy, his bravery is unwavering, and he consistently demonstrates a willingness to put himself in harm's way to protect others. His primary motivation is not centered on personal glory in this adventure but stems from his innate desire to help Pokémon in need. Upon arriving at Pokémon Hills, a nature park within a large city, he is immediately compelled to assist a lost and frightened Genesect, an ancient Pokémon brought back to life from a fossil. He acts as a compassionate mediator, trying to understand the Genesect's plight and find a peaceful resolution to the conflict they have caused.
In the story of this film, Ash takes on the role of a peacemaker and a bridge between different groups. When a group of five Genesect, led by a powerful red one, attempt to take over Pokémon Hills to build a new home, the local wild Pokémon fight back, and a powerful, newly awakened Mewtwo arrives to stop the destruction. Ash's primary function is to defuse this escalating three-way conflict. He is the first to befriend the lone, non-aggressive Genesect, showing it kindness and offering to help find its home. Later, he bravely steps between Mewtwo and the red Genesect during their climactic battle, physically trying to stop the fighting and appealing to their better nature. His actions directly lead to the red Genesect having a moment of realization that ends the battle.
Ash’s key relationships are central to his role. His bond with Pikachu remains the most significant, as they face every challenge together, with Pikachu always ready to defend him. He travels with Iris and Cilan, who provide support and companionship, though Ash is often the one taking the lead in direct confrontation with the legendary Pokémon. His most crucial relationship in this film is with the friendly Genesect. Ash’s unwavering empathy and refusal to see it as a threat allow him to earn its trust, which becomes vital in convincing the other Genesect that humans and Pokémon can be allies. He also serves as a contrast to Mewtwo, who initially believes the Genesect must be forcibly removed, whereas Ash advocates for understanding and finding them a suitable home.
Ash does not undergo a fundamental personality change in this movie, as his core traits are already well-established. However, his resolve and his ability to empathize with even the most aggressive and lost of Pokémon are put to the test and reaffirmed. His development is shown through his successful mediation of a conflict that was previously being solved only with violence. By the film's end, he is instrumental in identifying Absentia National Park as the perfect new home for the Genesect, providing a definitive and compassionate solution to their problem.
Regarding notable abilities, Ash's primary strength is not physical power but his exceptional talent for connecting with and understanding Pokémon. This ability, sometimes linked to a unique aura sensitivity, allows him to befriend a legendary Pokémon like Genesect almost immediately. He displays considerable physical bravery, often running into dangerous situations without hesitation. As a trainer, he commands Pikachu effectively in battle, and his other Pokémon, such as Oshawott, also play supportive roles, such as helping to extinguish a fire on the Genesect's nest. While he is a capable battler, his greatest skill in this film is his compassion and his unshakable belief in the goodness of Pokémon, which ultimately proves to be the key to resolving the crisis.
