Christa Lips

Description
Christa Lips is a Dutch actress, voice actress, and singer, widely recognized for her long-standing role as the voice of Ash Ketchum in the Dutch-language version of the Pokémon anime series for nearly 25 years. Born on October 20, 1964, in Castricum, she graduated in light music vocals from the Hilversum Conservatory and also plays the violin.

Her career in voice acting began with her first major role as Tommy in the Dutch adaptation of the animated series Rugrats (known as Ratjetoe in Dutch). This led to her being cast as the voice of Ash Ketchum in 1999. A casting director approached her, knowing she could credibly perform the voice of a young boy. Lips provided the voice for the character across all Dutch adaptations of the series, including numerous television seasons, specials, and films such as Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, and Pokémon Journeys: The Series, among many others spanning from 1999 to 2023. The role of a ten-year-old boy was originally and continuously voiced by a woman to maintain vocal consistency, as a male actor's voice would change with age. Lips recorded her final lines for the character in June 2023, following the announcement that Ash and Pikachu would be retired from the main series.

Beyond her iconic work on Pokémon, Lips has an extensive portfolio of voice roles in Dutch-dubbed productions. She is known for voicing Pearl (Parel) and Karen in SpongeBob SquarePants, Spike and Diamond Tiara in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Snap in ChalkZone, and Rocky in Paw Patrol. She has also lent her voice to video game characters, including Luke Triton in Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy and Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, as well as Hex, Cynder, and Stealth Elf in Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure. Her theater work includes performances with the company Theater Terra from 2002 to 2005 in productions such as Kikker, de Musical and Kleine Ezel. For her role in the latter, she received a nomination for the John Kraaijkamp Musical Award in 2005.

In addition to her performance work, Lips is also active as a translator for Dutch dubbing adaptations. She has translated numerous films and series from English, French, and German, including several Pokémon titles, The Adventures of Tintin, the live-action film Beauty and the Beast, and the series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
