Description
Denjiro is a samurai from Wano Country who serves as one of the Nine Red Scabbards, the loyal retainers of the late daimyo Kozuki Oden. After witnessing Oden’s execution twenty years before the present story, Denjiro was consumed by grief and rage. This intense emotion physically distorted his face, making him unrecognizable. Adopting the alias Kyoshiro, he reinvented himself as a flamboyant and seemingly ruthless yakuza boss. Under this new identity, he built the Kyoshiro Family in the Flower Capital, gaining enough notoriety and influence to be invited into the service of the usurper shogun Kurozumi Orochi as a trusted bodyguard.
As Kyoshiro, Denjiro presented a cheerful, sake-loving, and often unscrupulous persona, but this masked an unyielding loyalty and a patient, strategic mind. For two decades, he secretly worked to undermine Orochi’s regime while awaiting the prophesied return of the Kozuki loyalists. He covertly distributed wealth to impoverished citizens, gathered intelligence, and, crucially, located and protected Kozuki Hiyori, Oden’s daughter. He raised her within the pleasure quarters as the oiran Komurasaki, shielding her from discovery and orchestrating a faked death to preserve her safety when necessary. His motivations were entirely driven by a desire to avenge Oden, restore the Kozuki clan, and liberate Wano from tyranny.
When the time for the rebellion arrived, Denjiro shed his Kyoshiro mask and rejoined the other Scabbards. He fought alongside them in the raid on Onigashima, clashing directly with the Beast Pirates and Kaido. His swordsmanship is of the highest caliber, and he is capable of using advanced Armament Haki, known in Wano as Ryou, which he can imbue into his blade to pierce even Kaido’s durable body. He secretly trained in Oden’s Two-Sword Style and joined his comrades in using the technique Togen Toshoku to strike at the old scar on Kaido’s body, though the attack ultimately lacked Oden’s full power. Throughout the battle, he also engaged and subdued enemies such as the Tobiroppo Sasaki, cut a Beast Pirates ship in half with a single slash, and fought Roronoa Zoro to a draw during a brief skirmish. His most decisive act was personally severing the final head of Kurozumi Orochi, finally avenging Oden.
Denjiro’s key relationships are defined by deep bonds with the Kozuki family and his fellow Scabbards. He had known Kin’emon before either served Oden, and he holds great respect for Kin’emon as a wise leader. His bond with Hiyori is that of a protective guardian and co-conspirator. Toward Orochi, he maintained a flawless facade of subservience while nursing a cold, unending hatred. In the aftermath of the war, Denjiro was appointed daimyo of the Kibi region, carrying forward Oden’s legacy in a time of peace. His character development traces an arc from a grief-shattered warrior hiding behind a false face to a hero who reclaims his true name and purpose, demonstrating how patience, sacrifice, and an unbreakable spirit can ultimately topple oppression.
