Description
Hyogoro, also known as Hyogoro of the Flower, is a character from Wano Country who was once its most famous and powerful yakuza boss. In the present day, he is a prisoner in the Udon region, where he is commonly referred to as Grandpa Hyo by the other inmates. Now at the age of seventy, he appears as a small, elderly man with a cyan tuft of hair and goatee that resemble small flames, along with blue tattoos on his shoulders and upper back that feature pink flower patterns. He wears a black and white striped yukata, small round orange glasses, and warabi sandals. Twenty years ago, however, he was a much taller and heavier-set individual with longer, wilder hair, a powerful physique, and he wielded a long thin katana as his weapon of choice.
Despite his background as a yakuza leader, Hyogoro is an extremely honorable and kind man, famously known throughout Wano for his unmatched chivalry and sense of justice. He was deeply respected not only by countless samurai but also by Kozuki Oden himself. Hyogoro despises the tyranny of Kurozumi Orochi and the Beasts Pirates, denouncing their oppression of Wano's citizens. When given the chance to submit to Orochi after he took power, he refused outright. After spending two decades imprisoned in the harsh conditions of Udon, his body and spirit became broken, and he grew somewhat timid. However, he never fully abandoned his principles, still voicing discontent at his meager food rations despite knowing such complaints were punishable. He had consigned himself to a miserable death in prison until Monkey D. Luffy entered his life.
Hyogoro's primary motivation becomes the restoration of Wano Country to its former glory under the Kozuki family. He yearns for the old days when honorable people were still alive and dreams of overthrowing the oppressive regimes of Orochi and Kaido. Upon learning from Raizo that members of the Nine Red Scabbards and Momonosuke are still alive, his will to live is dramatically renewed. Overjoyed and relieved that he did not die before knowing the truth, he requests to join the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance to help crush the country's tyrants.
Hyogoro's role in the story is pivotal as both a mentor and a symbol of resistance. He becomes a key teacher for Luffy, instructing him in the advanced application of Busoshoku Haki, which is known as Ryuo in Wano. This technique allows the user to emit their Haki a short distance without a medium, enabling them to strike an opponent without physically touching them. Hyogoro demonstrates this power by defeating a Gifter named Alpacaman with a single, non-contact blow. He oversees Luffy's training in the Udon prison and continues to support the captain's development even during the subsequent raid on Onigashima.
His relationships are central to his character arc. He forms an incredibly strong bond with Monkey D. Luffy, who saves his life and shares food with him in prison. Luffy's actions remind Hyogoro of Wano's honorable past, and he feels immense gratitude and respect for the pirate, believing it is fate that brought them together. Hyogoro is so dedicated to Luffy's growth that he once stood in the path of an angry Big Mom just to test Luffy's skills. He also has a deep connection with the Kozuki family, having been an ally of Oden and later pledging his service to his son Momonosuke. His loyalty is further demonstrated through his interactions with other Wano characters like Raizo and Kawamatsu, who continue to worry for his safety even after his long imprisonment.
In terms of character development, Hyogoro transforms from a broken, defeated old man who had accepted his looming death into a revitalized warrior with a renewed purpose. His physical appearance also undergoes a notable change during the raid on Onigashima. After being infected with Queen's Ice Oni virus, the effects of the disease temporarily restore his body to its prime, younger state, complete with elongated nails and sharp molars. In this powerful form, he defeats numerous enemies, including members of the Mimawarigumi. As the virus reaches its limit and he risks losing his sanity, he bravely asks his allies to end his life before he can harm them, only to be saved at the last moment by Chopper, who completes the antidote and reverses his condition back to his small, elderly stature.
Hyogoro's notable abilities are considerable despite his aged appearance. He is an extremely skilled and experienced user of Busoshoku Haki, capable of using the advanced emission technique to attack without touching his target. He also possesses great agility and endurance, having survived an attack from Big Mom by using his Haki to soften the impact. Beyond his Haki prowess, he is a formidable samurai and swordsman, able to easily defeat dozens of Beasts Pirates with his blade. He has developed his own fighting style known as the Flower One Sword Style, with a technique called Dohatsukohai, where he envelops his body in Haki that rises like flames to instantly cut down his opponent.
