Description
Ghin, also known as Gin, is a character from the East Blue who serves as the combat commander of the Krieg Pirates, holding the position of second-in-command with the epithet "Man-Demon" or "Ghost". Hailing from the East Blue, he is a 27-year-old pirate with a bounty of 12,000,000 berries. Physically, Ghin has a lean and somewhat unkempt appearance, characterized by scruffy dark hair, a thin beard, deep-set eyes with prominent dark circles, and thick lips. He typically wears a grey-white open jacket adorned with a red sea-serpent design over a green shirt, along with a blue-striped headband and spherical red earrings.
Initially, Ghin is defined by his fierce and seemingly absolute loyalty to his captain, Don Krieg. He has a reputation for being ruthless and cold-hearted, carrying out brutal and inhumane orders without hesitation, which is how he earned his fearsome nickname. However, beneath this exterior lies a more complex personality. His loyalty to Krieg is rooted not just in respect but also in fear, and he secretly wishes to escape from under the captain's shadow. Ghin possesses a strong sense of honor and gratitude, which becomes the primary catalyst for his character development. A starving and desperate Ghin is shown kindness for the first time by Sanji, the chef of the Baratie, who gives him a free meal. This act profoundly changes Ghin, creating an internal conflict within him as he finds himself unable to harm his benefactor, even when directly ordered to do so by Krieg.
Ghin's role in the story takes place during the Baratie Arc. After his own fleet was decimated by the Warlord Dracule Mihawk in the Grand Line, Ghin returns to the East Blue with Krieg. He is captured by the Marines but escapes, starving, onto the floating restaurant Baratie. His encounter with Sanji leads him to bring the rest of his starving crew to the restaurant, which sets the stage for a major conflict. Ghin is torn between his duty to Krieg, who demands he help take over the Baratie, and his debt to Sanji. This turmoil forces him into a reluctant confrontation with Sanji, where his unwillingness to deliver a killing blow becomes a central point of tension.
Ghin's key relationships drive the narrative of his arc. His relationship with Don Krieg is one of tyranny and reluctant servitude. He respects Krieg's power but is also terrorized by it, a dynamic that ultimately leads to his betrayal when Krieg's cruelty goes too far. His relationship with Sanji is the most significant, as Sanji is the first person to ever treat him with compassion. This act of kindness creates an unbreakable bond, and Ghin comes to hold Sanji in such high regard that he refuses to kill him, defying his captain for the first time. He also has an important interaction with Monkey D. Luffy. Initially, Ghin dismisses Luffy as a naive young pirate and warns him against entering the Grand Line. However, after witnessing Luffy's determination and his defeat of Krieg, Ghin gains immense respect for him, expressing a desire to meet again in the Grand Line.
Throughout the Baratie Arc, Ghin undergoes significant development. He starts as a seemingly one-dimensional, loyal enforcer but is gradually revealed to be a man struggling with his conscience. His arc concludes with a complete break from Krieg; after Krieg uses a deadly poison gas that endangers everyone, Ghin gives his own gas mask to the unconscious Luffy, sacrificing his own safety. Following Krieg's defeat by Luffy, Ghin finally rebels, knocking out the delusional Krieg and declaring that they must start over. He takes the unconscious Krieg and the remaining crew members away, expressing his wish to one day meet Luffy and Sanji again on the Grand Line, making his ultimate fate unknown.
In terms of abilities, Ghin is a highly skilled and formidable warrior, considered Krieg's right hand for his combat prowess. His main fighting style is known as the Man-Demon Tactics, where he uses a pair of unique tonfa, which are batons weighted with heavy iron balls at the ends. He can spin these weapons to build momentum and deliver devastating blows, powerful enough to shatter thick iron shields in a single strike. Even when severely weakened by starvation, Ghin was able to easily defeat multiple Marine soldiers and escape captivity. He is also proficient with firearms, having been seen using a flintlock pistol and a double-barreled shotgun.
