Description
Chef Zeff, also known by his epithet Red-Leg, is the head chef and owner of the Baratie, an oceangoing restaurant in East Blue. Before establishing the Baratie, he was a renowned and formidable pirate captain leading the Cook Pirates. His nickname, Red-Leg, originated from his fearsome fighting style, as the immense power of his kicks would leave his opponents bloodied and his own legs stained red. Zeff is a tall, elderly man with a distinctive appearance, including a long, braided mustache and an exceptionally tall chef's hat. He uses a wooden prosthetic leg, having lost his right leg in a past incident.
As a person, Zeff has a hot-tempered and stern demeanor, and he rules his restaurant with an iron fist, showing no hesitation in disciplining his staff or unruly customers. Despite this harsh exterior, he possesses a deep-seated compassion, a trait rooted in his own traumatic experience of starvation. He holds an unwavering respect for food and despises waste, a principle he instills in others; for example, he once forced a young Sanji to eat a poorly made dish rather than throw it away, and during his pirate days, he strictly forbade his crew from stealing food from their victims. This deep understanding of hunger leads him to feed anyone in need, even his enemies, as demonstrated when he provided a meal to the starving crew of the pirate Don Krieg. Furthermore, Zeff adheres to a strict code of chivalry, believing that a man should never harm a woman. He passed this belief on to his protégé, Sanji, and consequently avoids hiring female chefs at the Baratie to prevent any conflict with his disciplinary methods.
Zeff's defining motivation, shared with his adopted son Sanji, is to find the legendary All Blue, a mythical sea where the waters of the East Blue, West Blue, North Blue, and South Blue converge, said to contain ingredients from all over the world. This shared dream is the foundation of their relationship. Zeff first encountered Sanji when his pirate crew attacked the passenger ship where the boy worked as a junior cook. While the other pirates mocked Sanji's dream of finding the All Blue, Zeff was silent, recognizing it as his own. When a fierce storm engulfed both ships, Zeff dove into the sea to rescue the drowning Sanji. The two were stranded on a barren rock island with only a small bag of food. To ensure Sanji's survival, Zeff gave him the entire portion of food while he kept a larger bag, which he claimed held his own rations. In reality, the larger bag contained only treasure. To survive, Zeff sacrificed his own leg, either by eating it in the manga or by severing it with an anchor chain during the rescue in the anime. After being rescued following 85 days stranded, Zeff, who had lost his leg and his crew, abandoned his life as a pirate. He used his remaining treasure to build the Baratie, a floating restaurant, fulfilling a vow made on the island to create a place that could provide food for the starving at sea.
Throughout Sanji's childhood at the Baratie, Zeff acted as his brutally honest mentor and surrogate father. He taught Sanji everything about cooking, emphasizing that a chef's hands are sacred and should never be used in combat, which led to Sanji developing his own powerful kicking techniques. Despite their constant, bickering relationship where they call each other "old man" and "little eggplant," Zeff's deep care for Sanji is evident. While he appears eager to drive Sanji away, this is a ploy to push him to pursue their shared dream of the All Blue, a dream that cannot be fulfilled by staying in East Blue. When Sanji finally left to join Monkey D. Luffy's Straw Hat Pirates, Zeff was moved to tears. Later, his safety was used as a threat by the Vinsmoke Family to coerce Sanji into a political marriage, proving just how much Zeff means to him as a father figure.
In terms of abilities, Zeff is a legendary figure known for his incredible physical strength. Even in his old age with a prosthetic leg, he is a formidable fighter. His kicks possess superhuman power, capable of shattering rock, leaving dents in steel, and even extinguishing flames with the air pressure alone. He is also an extremely skilled master chef with encyclopedic culinary knowledge, able to prepare meals for a hundred men single-handedly. As the captain of a pirate crew that successfully sailed the Grand Line for a year and returned safely, he also possesses immense knowledge and experience with the dangers of that sea. In the story, he plays a crucial role as an ally to the Straw Hat Pirates during the Baratie Arc, initially forcing Luffy to work as a chore boy to pay for damage to the restaurant but ultimately helping to defeat the invading Krieg Pirates and giving Sanji his blessing to set sail.
